"This is a tremendous loss for the Bengal music industry.”

Bangladeshi bassist and former Fossils member Chandramouli Biswas has passed away at the age of 48 in a suspected suicide.

Fossils is a Kolkata-based rock band, renowned for its electrifying performances and large fan base in Bangladesh.

Chandramouli’s body was found at a rented property in Kolkata on January 12, 2025.

He reportedly took his own life after battling depression and financial difficulties for several years.

His body was discovered by Mohul Chakraborty, lead vocalist of Golok, who became worried after failing to contact him.

Mohul said: “I contacted a close friend, and together we went to his home, where we found him deceased.

“This is a tremendous loss for the Bengal music industry.”

Police reports indicate that Chandramouli had been suffering from depression for several years.

One officer said they spoke to relatives and friends, who said he was “depressed for some years and was also undergoing treatment”.

A suicide note said no one was responsible for his death.

The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and authorities are verifying the note’s handwriting.

The bassist, who had been associated with bands like Fossils, Golok and Zombie Cage Control, left behind a legacy in Bengal’s music scene.

Chandramouli’s journey into music was marked by his departure from a promising engineering career to follow his passion.

Fossils manager Rupsha Dasgupta recalled his contributions to the band, stating:

“Chandra joined Fossils in 2000 as a guitarist and later became the bassist. He performed with us for over 15 years and was an integral part of the band.”

“He was incredibly talented and had a huge following among young fans. His death is shocking and deeply saddening.”

The tragic news reached Fossils as they were en route to a concert in Kalyani, West Bengal.

Despite their grief, the band went ahead with the performance, dedicating it to Chandramouli.

Frontman Rupam Islam expressed his sorrow, saying:

“Chandra was not just a bandmate but a close friend.”

“We were planning to discuss new music, but now those conversations will never happen. We performed in his memory, hoping to honour his contributions.”

Fossils, led by Rupam Islam and founded in 1998, revolutionised rock music in West Bengal.

The band’s iconic tracks, including ‘Neel Rang Chhilo Bhishan Priyo’ and ‘Aro Ekber’, remain loved among fans.

Chandramouli Biswas is survived by his parents, who, along with his friends and admirers, are left to grapple with the loss.
