"nobody was answering the door."
A Pakistani couple was found dead in their Mumbai apartment on June 9, 2025, in what police suspect to be a murder-suicide.
Authorities believe Sanjay Sachdeva fatally stabbed his wife, Sapna Das, before taking his own life.
The incident occurred in the Kharghar area of Navi Mumbai, where the couple had been residing on a long-term visa with their two children.
According to police, Sapna sustained multiple stab wounds to the neck, back, and shoulder.
The couple’s children discovered the situation when they returned from school and found the apartment locked from the inside.
After no one answered the door, they alerted a neighbour, who then contacted Sapna’s sister, Sangeeta Makhija.
Sangeeta used a key to enter the home and found both adults lying in a pool of blood.
A police officer from Kharghar stated: “Their kids, aged 10 and 6, had gone to school and when they came back, nobody was answering the door.
“They informed their neighbour, who then called the victim’s sister staying in Kharghar, who came and opened the house to find both of them in a pool of blood.”
According to Senior Inspector Deepak Surve of the Kharghar police, the couple had frequent arguments and Sanjay was known to have a short temper.
He was also unemployed and searching for work.
Police say he had assaulted his wife in front of neighbours in May 2025. However, Sapna had declined to file an official complaint.
Her sister had reportedly reached out to the police for help after the alleged assault.
But they stated that they could not take effective action since Sapna declined to file a complaint.
The family had come to India from Pakistan in November 2024.
Their apartment was rented under Sangeeta Makhija’s name, and she had reportedly been supporting them financially.
They were in the process of preparing to return to Pakistan following recent diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
Police recovered a kitchen knife from the scene, believed to be the murder weapon.
A post-mortem examination has been conducted, and an investigation is ongoing.
The two children are now in the care of relatives. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional factors.
However, they did say the early signs currently point to a murder-suicide.
