Bhil allegedly decided to stage a violent attack at a local school.
An Indian man has been arrested after embarking on a violent crime spree to prove that he was alive, following a government error that mistakenly declared him dead.
Baburam Bhil, a resident of Mithora village in Balotra, Rajasthan, received an official death certificate from the government.
The certificate, which bore his name, led Bhil to fear that his property would be seized as a result of his erroneous death declaration.
Despite numerous efforts to correct the mistake, Bhil’s attempts were futile.
Frustrated and desperate, he resorted to drastic measures to draw attention to his situation.
Bhil allegedly decided to stage a violent attack at a local school.
On July 19, 2024, he entered the Chuli Bera Dharana School armed with knives and a petrol bottle.
During the attack, he reportedly stabbed two staff members and a parent before taking students and teachers hostage.
The victims, Acting Headmaster Hardayal and teacher Suresh Kumar, sustained serious injuries.
All injured individuals were transported to a hospital in Jodhpur for treatment.
The police quickly responded to the incident, arresting the Indian man at the scene.
During questioning, Bhil explained that after receiving the death certificate, he believed the government was planning to confiscate his property.
To demonstrate that he was indeed alive, he orchestrated the school attack, expecting that his arrest would reestablish his presence in government records.
Bhil had previously committed several other crimes in an attempt to get arrested, though the specifics of those crimes remain unclear.
The incident is currently under investigation.
In India, crime sprees and even murder for bizarre reasons are not uncommon.
In March 2021, a man was arrested for murdering his sister-in-law and her mother over a toilet.
Ram explained that he lived with his three sons. One of his sons, who passed away, was married to a woman named Sunita.
He said that after his son’s death, he did not want to give Sunita a share in the property, however, she was entitled to it.
Bhagatram told police that he was angry about Sunita’s share in the property.
He and Sunita had been feuding over the land. Her mother Kamalabai had been staying with Sunita for a few days and knew about the property dispute.
For the past few days, Sunita insisted that they build a toilet at the back of the house. Bhagatram objected to the plan.
On March 6, 2021, Sunita continued with the planning of the toilet which angered Bhagatram.
The pair became embroiled in an argument which led to Bhagatram slapping Sunita. He stated that the land belonged to him.
Meanwhile, Ram watched the row unfold and allegedly encouraged his son to kill Sunita.
Bhagatram then picked up a shovel and struck his sister-in-law over the head with it. As Kamalabai came to her daughter’s aid, she was also hit with the shovel.
Both women fell to the ground and later died from serious head injuries.
