"I called my husband and others but she was no more."
Singer-actress Mallika Rajput has died at the age of 35 in what is initially believed to have been a case of suicide.
Her body was found in a room at her home in Kotwali Nagar, Sultanpur.
The discovery left members of her family in a state of shock while locals gathered near the house.
Police sent the body for a post-mortem.
Mallika’s mother Sumitra Singh believes her daughter committed suicide but said she was unaware of the incident.
She said: “Earlier the door was closed. And the light was on. We took three rounds but could not open the door.
“At last, I looked through the window and saw that she was standing there.
“When I knocked on the door, I saw that our daughter was hanging. I called my husband and others but she was no more.”
Shriram Pandey, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said an initial investigation has indicated that Mallika took her own life.
However, the exact cause of death will be confirmed once the post-mortem has been conducted.
Following her shocking death, one of Mallika’s Instagram posts went viral.
On February 1, 2024, Mallika shared several self-written poems. The Hindi poems were about heartbreak.
One line read: “It is impossible for me to live without you, till when I will fear separation.”
Social media users expressed their grief, with one posting:
“Shocking. Actress and singer Mallika Rajput aka Vijay Laxshmi commits suicide in her hometown Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh.
“She worked in Revolver Rani with Kangana. She acted in a few videos and web series.”
Mallika Rajput played a supporting role in the 2014 film Revolver Rani, which starred Kangana Ranaut.
It also starred Vir Das, Piyush Mishra, Zakir Hussain and Pankaj Saraswat.
The film received mixed reviews, with praise for the humour but criticism for the latter part of the film.
Mallika Rajput also appeared in the music video for ‘Yaara Tujhe’ by Shaan.
In 2016, she joined the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) but she left the political party two years later.
After her career in the entertainment industry and politics didn’t last long, she turned to spirituality.
She was appointed the National Secretary General of the Bharatiya Savarna Sangh in Uttar Pradesh in 2022.
Mallika was a trained Kathak dancer and she also started writing and performing her own ghazals at several poetry sessions.
