"Okay, love. See you later."
A surprising turn occurred in the latest instalment of the BBC’s EastEnders.
The episode was uploaded to BBC iPlayer on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at 6 am.
It was revealed that Masood Ahmed (Nitin Ganatra) was dating his old flame Jane Beale (Laurie Brett) again.
Some EastEnders fans will remember that Masood strayed from his wife Zainab Masood (Nina Wadia) in 2010.
He developed a close friendship with Jane who was having trouble with her husband Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt).
During a particular episode, the pair headed to a hotel room to cement their attraction but changed their minds.
But when Ian discovered their romance, he was livid and punched Masood.
Jane and Masood reconciled in 2011 when Zainab married Yusef Khan (Ace Bhatti).
However, they separated again when Masood realised he still loved Zainab.
Jane left EastEnders in 2017 but made an unannounced return on July 16, 2024.
Her purpose was to reconcile with her adopted son Bobby Beale (Clay Milner Russell) with Ian’s help.
In the following episode, Ian asked Jane whether she was seeing anyone.
Jane replied: “No, no. Not that it’s any of your business anyway.
“I told you that after us, I just wanted to be on my own.”
However, as the episode ended, it transpired that this was not the case. Jane was seen on her own with a phone to her ear.
She said: “Hey, you. Yeah, [they’re] all gone. No chance of any awkward reunions.
“Okay, love. See you later. Oh, Masood, that silver band with the scripture – he loved it. Thank you.”
Jane then hung up, holding the phone with a smile on her face.
Masood was not seen onscreen but could this mean we could see him in EastEnders following his departure in 2019?
In March 2024, suspicions were aroused as to whether Masood would return to the show after Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal) revealed she had been in touch with him.
In those episodes, she told Nish Panesar (Navin Chowdhry): “[Masood] is more than happy to put the whole lease under my name.”
This led to speculation that Masood could be coming back to the show.
EastEnders is currently putting plans in place for its 40th anniversary in February 2025, which includes several reappearances of old characters.
It has been confirmed that the likes of Chrissie Watts (Tracy-Ann Oberman) and David Wicks (Michael French) are set to make brief returns to the show.
EastEnders continues on Thursday, July 18, 2024.
