"My husband used to hate me."
On the podcast show Timeout With Ankit, Govinda’s wife –Sunita Ahuja – candidly delved into the intricacies of her life with Govinda.
She shed light on their relationship dynamics, challenges, and the evolution of their bond over the years.
During the podcast, Sunita opened up about Govinda’s habit of surrounding himself with individuals who echo his sentiments.
She claimed he creates a bubble that shields him from certain realities.
Despite this, Sunita allegedly does not hesitate to offer constructive criticism when needed, even if it doesn’t always sit well with the actor.
Sunita revealed one of the key points of contention was Govinda’s discomfort with criticism.
He often attributed it to having “enemies in his house”, alluding to her.
Sunita also touched upon the cultural disparities she encountered post-marriage.
She revealed that she was raised in a more affluent neighbourhood in Mumbai than in Govinda’s background.
She humorously reminisced about the transition from her signature miniskirts to traditional sarees – a shift that she initially struggled to reconcile with.
Their different upbringings and values occasionally led to friction, with Sunita playfully asserting her Bandra roots against Govinda’s Virar origins.
Sunita Ahuja revealed: “I went from wearing miniskirts to sarees. That’s why my husband used to hate me.
“I would tell him, ‘I’m from Bandra, you’re from Virar, boss’.
“And he’d say, ‘No, my mother won’t like it’.”
A particularly intriguing revelation was Govinda’s contrasting views on on-screen attire.
While he expressed acceptance of his female co-stars wearing revealing outfits, he held a different standard when it came to Sunita’s attire.
Sunita shared another incident that highlighted the lengths to which some fans would go to get closer to the beloved actor.
She recounted that a minister’s daughter disguised herself as a maid to infiltrate their household and be near Govinda.
Sunita recalled: “There was this fan who pretended to be a house help and she stayed with us for around 20-22 days.
“I thought that she looked like she was from a well-off family.
“I told my mother-in-law that she doesn’t know how to do the dishes or clean the house.
“Eventually, we got to know she was some minister’s daughter and a Govinda fan.
“I was young at that time but I got suspicious. She used to stay up late and wait for Govinda. I was stunned.
“Finally, I got a background check for her. She then cried to us and confessed she was Govinda’s fan.
“Then her father came and brought four cars with him. I think she worked with us for about 20 days.”
“This is the kind of fan following he had.”
Sunita Ahuja and Govinda married in 1987 – a year after the actor began his acting career.
In the 1990s, Govinda was one of the most popular leading men in Bollywood, famous for his comedic roles.
On the work front, he was last seen in Rangeela Raja (2019).
