"These innocent lives paid the price of negligence.”

Pakistani stars have taken to social media in outrage after flash floods by the Swat River, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, claimed at least 17 lives, including several children.

Many of the victims were gathered for breakfast along the banks of the river near Mingora when the water surged without warning.

As horrifying videos of stranded tourists and sweeping torrents flooded social media, public anger quickly turned towards the government.

Many are calling it an entirely preventable disaster.

Celebrities, activists, and public figures have since raised their voices, grieving the victims while questioning systemic failures.

Singer and actress Hadiqa Kiani was among the first to speak out.

In a sombre Instagram story, she wrote: “Shocked and incredibly saddened by this tragedy. Praying for everyone impacted.

“We need systems that control the impact of rain. We need leadership.”

In a follow-up, her tone sharpened:

“Now and then we face these life-taking floods, and yet we take no solid measures. These innocent lives paid the price of negligence.”

She urged officials to move beyond apologies and commit to real structural reform, adding:

“Our people deserve more than temporary fixes.”

Hira Mani echoed similar sentiments. In a deeply emotional post, she mourned the scale of loss and the surrounding silence.

She said: “There is no help. No rescue. This is not just a natural disaster. This is a human tragedy ignored.”

Her words reflected the widespread helplessness many felt watching the tragedy unfold.

She also urged people to take action, emphasising the urgency:

“Swat needs us. Not tomorrow. Not later. Now.”

Yashma Gill provided harrowing details, revealing that over sixteen members of a single family had been swept away, with only three survivors.

She urged her followers to check weather updates and avoid riverbanks during monsoons.

Yashma wrote:

“Watching the video and witnessing their helplessness has really torn my heart.”

Cricketer Naseem Shah expressed heartfelt sorrow, calling the loss “absolutely devastating”.

Actors Yasir Hussain and Zara Noor Abbas kept their messages brief but powerful.

Zara prayed for the victims’ souls while Yasir wrote:

“Sad, sad, sad.”

Aiman Khan offered a cautionary reminder to avoid rivers during monsoon season, and Dr Shaista Lodhi prayed for mercy amid the Swat floods tragedy.

As the floodwaters subside, the pain remains. Many are questioning how many more lives must be lost before real change is made.
