"Despite the best efforts of paramedics, he sadly did not survive."
Cricketer Junaid Zafar Khan tragically passed away after collapsing during a local match in Adelaide, Australia.
Khan was representing the Old Concordians Cricket Club in a game against Prince Alfred Old Collegians at Concordia College Oval.
Khan had moved to Adelaide from Pakistan in 2013 to work in IT.
He was an active member of the local cricket community, and on the day of the match, he had fielded for 40 overs and batted for seven before collapsing at approximately 4 pm local time.
At the time, the temperature was above 40°C, with the Bureau of Meteorology reporting 41.7°C.
South Australia was experiencing a heatwave, and the extreme temperatures contributed to the already difficult conditions for the players.
Despite the intense heat, the match continued.
According to Adelaide Turf Cricket Association rules, games are typically cancelled when temperatures exceed 42°C.
However, special measures apply for games in conditions up to 40°C, including extra breaks for hydration and cooling.
These measures were in place during the match, but tragically, Khan’s collapse occurred shortly after.
Old Concordians Cricket Club expressed deep sorrow over Khan’s death.
In a statement, the club said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of a valued member of the Old Concordians Cricket Club, who tragically suffered a medical episode while playing on the Concordia College oval today.
“Despite the best efforts of paramedics, he sadly did not survive.
“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time.”
Emergency services arrived at the scene and attempted to revive Junaid Khan, including performing CPR.
However, despite their efforts, the cricketer could not be saved.
Fellow club member Hasan Anjum shared a heartfelt tribute to Khan, remembering him fondly.
“He always liked to have a laugh, he always had something to say to cheer people up.
“It’s a huge loss, he was destined for very big things in his life.”
The Islamic Society of South Australia president, Ahmed Zreika, also offered condolences, urging the public to avoid speculation regarding the cause of Khan’s death.
He said: “At this stage, there’s no official confirmation on the cause of his passing, and it’s important to let medical professionals do their job rather than speculate.”
The cricket community and those who knew Junaid Khan are left in mourning, as they remember a beloved teammate, friend, and member of the community.
