Hamza Choudhury’s presence could make all the difference when Bangladesh face India in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers on March 25, 2025.

Hamza Choudhury, who is currently on loan at Sheffield United, is set to make his debut for Bangladesh, adding star power to their ranks.

The match will be held in Shillong, Meghalaya.

Hamza Choudhury, born to a Grenadian father and Bangladeshi mother, arrived in Sylhet on March 17 to a hero’s welcome.

Speaking to reporters at Osmani International Airport, he said:

“It feels incredible. My heart is pumped. Amazing, amazing. A long time coming. Excited to be here.”

He switched his national allegiance from England to Bangladesh and this could prove a headache for the Indian national team.

India will be boosted by Sunil Chhetri’s return.

The legendary striker retired from international football in June 2024 but reversed his decision to play in the qualifiers.

India, ranked 126th in FIFA rankings, has struggled in 2024, failing to win a single match.

In early 2025, Chhetri came out of retirement.

However, Hamza Choudhury brings a different level of experience.

He has played in the Premier League, making 131 appearances for Leicester City and winning the FA Cup in 2021.

Hamza Choudhury is confident about Bangladesh’s chances.

He said: “Inshallah, we will win. I’ve spoken with coach Javier (Cabrera) about many things. Inshallah, we will win and progress.”

The midfielder previously represented England at the U-21 level, making his debut in 2018.

He played in the UEFA European U-21 Championship in 2019.

Choudhury’s initial dream was to represent England at the senior level, but he later switched allegiance to Bangladesh.

He obtained a Bangladeshi passport in August 2024 and completed the switch in December.

India must finish top of their group to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup.

They are grouped with Hong Kong, Singapore, and Bangladesh.

While Hong Kong (155th) and Singapore (160th) are ranked below India, Bangladesh (185th) could pose a challenge with Hamza Choudhury in the squad.

India’s campaign starts with a friendly against the Maldives on March 19 before facing Bangladesh.

The qualifiers get underway on March 25, 2025, and conclude on March 31, 2026, with key matches in October and November.

A strong start is crucial for India’s hopes of advancing to the tournament.

Only one team from each group will qualify.

With every match carrying weight, India cannot afford to slip up.

The return of Chhetri and the presence of Hamza Choudhury for Bangladesh sets up an intriguing contest in Shillong, where both sides will be desperate for victory.
