"that makes me very upset when I do it."
Charli XCX has revealed that she has nerve damage in her neck after performing for months on her joint Sweat tour with Troye Sivan.
The 32-year-old pop artist said she had put her body through a lot as she was submerged under constant strobe lighting and the sound of autotune every night.
She said: “I find touring actually really hard emotionally.
“I have done a lot of physical damage to my body from performing.”
She also added that she is “in a lot of pain” when she is on stage and that it is a “very angry place” for her lately.
Charli’s shows are very active, and she is often seen whipping her hair around and shaking her head.
The singer said: “Genuinely, physically, I have nerve damage in my neck from the things that I’ve done onstage.
“For me to give a performance that I feel is good enough, I have to throw myself around physically – and that makes me very upset when I do it.”
Although from the outside, Charli XCX’s performance appears effortless, that is not the case and she has called performing live a “hellhole” because of this struggle.
But she has found comfort in her co-performer Troye Sivan:
“Being with Troye softens that quite a lot and a lot of other people on the tour made me feel a lot lighter.”
Despite the pain, Charli has had an outstanding summer, following the success of her album Brat and ‘Brat Summer‘ becoming a viral trend.
She has also landed seven nominations for the 2025 Grammy Awards and she highlighted that she has had no time to rest:
“I also don’t really sleep these days. 2020… um, what year is it? 2024 has not been a very restful year, for sure.”
The self-proclaimed Brat Girl received Grammy nominations for Best Music Video, Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Dance Pop Recording, Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Dance/Electronic Album and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
Although performing live has caused a lot of strain on her body, she does not plan on slowing down.
Charli XCX is gearing up for a run of 2025 live shows.
She was also recently named the face of Swedish fashion brand Acne Studios.
The singer unveiled the brand’s Spring/Summer 2025 campaign in a series of alluring photos.
