"They've got the spat their wives have had"
Amir Khan has offered to train Wayne Rooney for a potential boxing match against Jamie Vardy.
It was reported that Rooney had been approached by KSI‘s boxing promotion Misfits to discuss the ex-Manchester United striker potentially fighting at one of their events.
And Khan believes that if Rooney were to step into the ring, Leicester City striker Vardy would be the ideal opponent, following the ‘Wagatha Christie’ scandal that involved their wives Coleen and Rebekah.
The publicised case saw Rebekah lose her £3 million libel case against Coleen in 2022 after the latter accused her of leaking “false stories” about her private life.
Amir Khan said: “Jamie Vardy is the right fight for Wayne Rooney, that’s a very good even fight.
“They’ve got the spat their wives have had, what a fight that would make, it would sell well.
“They’re both around the same level as well. They’re both novices. I’d back Wayne though because Wayne’s more streetwise, he’s more solid.
“You don’t want to put him in the ring with someone that could hurt him, or outbox and make him look stupid, it should just be someone for a bit of fun as some like Wayne Rooney could get really hurt.
“He’s not really a boxer, so if he got in the deep end too quickly, it could knock his confidence and he could get hurt.”
Khan also offered to train Rooney, who is a big boxing fan and was a member of an amateur boxing club growing up.
He continued: “I’d love to train and help Wayne Rooney, sportsmen have a lot of respect for one another because they’ve been there and done it, so they’d listen to you more than a normal trainer.
“When you train with another athlete it’s going to push you and you’re going to train hard.”
Rooney previously confirmed that he had been approached by Misfits but insisted he remains fully focused on getting back into management after he was sacked as Birmingham City boss in January 2024.
He said: “They’ve been in touch and asked the question but I think at the minute I want to focus on getting back into management, not boxing.
“There’s been a few [offers] and obviously Misfits have been in and that’s been all over the news.
“But listen I want to focus on getting back into management, that’s my focus.”
