"Without even me asking he told he will donate 1.5 crore"

Renowned Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar is known for his charitable, caring nature and he has proven this once again by donating Rs 1.5 crore (£161,849.55) towards building a transgender home in Chennai, India.

Akshay has supported Laxmmi Bomb (2020) director Raghava Lawrence with his initiative to build a transgender home “for the first time in India.”

Filmmaker Raghava Lawrence took to Facebook to share the news of building India’s first transgender home in Chennai.

He also announced that Akshay Kumar has donated a generous Rs 1.5 crore (£161,849.55). He said:

“Hai friends and fans, I would like to share one good news, Akshay Kumar sir is donating 1.5 crore (£161,849.55) for building transgender home for the first time in India.

“As everyone is already aware that Larencce Charitable Trust has been initiating various projects for education, home for kids, medical and physically abled dancers.

“Our trust is now entering into its 15th year. We wanted to celebrate this 15th year by initiating a new project for uplifting transgenders by providing shelter for them.”

Raghava continued to mention that during filming for Laxmmi Bomb (2020) Akshay was made aware of his initiative. He said:

“Our trust has provided the land and we were looking forward to raise funds for the building.

“So during Laxmmi Bomb (2020) I was talking to Akshay Kumar sir about the trust projects and transgender’s home, immediately after hearing this without even me asking he told he will donate 1.5 crore (£161,849.55) for building transgender’s home.

“I consider everyone who helps as god, so now Akshay Kumar sir is a god for us.”

“I thank him for lending his huge support for this project.

“Our next vision is to uplift transgenders and provide shelter for them all over India with Akshay Kumar’s sir support.

“I thank him on behalf of all transgenders. We will inform the bhoomi Pooja date soon. I need all your blessing.”

Unfortunately, being transgender is still considered taboo in India, therefore Akshay’s donation and Raghava’s aim are a positive step forward.

Undoubtedly, this announcement has been welcomed by the LGBT community and activists in India.

Speaking to the Hindustan Times, Gauri Sawant explained how working to help transgenders is important. She said:

“It’s a good initiative if someone is donating money for the community. (Bollywood celebrities like Akshay Kumar) supporting this is the need of the society.

“We work for animal (welfare), why not transgenders? They are humans, only their sexual identity is different. Even I am building a house for kids of sex workers.”

Filmmaker Sridhar Rangayan also supported the need for a transgender home. He expressed:

“It’s a great initiative, what they should do is consult the transgender community, what are their needs.”

“They should not be left out. Transgender people have a lot of problems in finding a home, for them, a commune like this is very welcome.

“There are communes abroad in (the) United States and Europe. If something like this comes up, they can at least live their lives peacefully without any obstruction and trying to run around to find homes.”

Akshay Kumar’s recognition for the transgender community in India is certainly admirable.

It goes to show that greater awareness is needed by Bollywood stars who can help make a difference in society.
