India is set to open a university which will be a first for the country. It will be for the transgender community and it will be opened in Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar district.

Members of the community will be able to study from class one to post-graduation (PG). They will even be able to pursue research and go on to obtain a PhD should they choose to do so.

The transgender community has been one group of people who have been deprived of their basic rights, including education.

However, the country is taking measures to ensure positive changes for the community.

Calcutta University introduced a third gender option in its admission forms. This was a step in the right direction in making education inclusive.

The announcement of a university for transgender people will also drive positive change and show that transgender people are becoming more accepted in Indian society.

The university is being built by the Akhil Bhartiya Kinnar Siksha Seva Trust which is the All-India Transgender Education Service Trust.

Fully-dedicated classes in a range of subjects will begin from March 2020.

Dr Krishna Mohan Mishra, president of the trust, said:

“It is the first of its kind in the country where members of the transgender community will be able to get an education and the process of has already been initiated.

“From January 15 next year, two children who are brought up by the community members will get admission and from February and March other classes will start.”

“In the university, the transgender community will be able to study right from class one to PG and even do research and get a PhD degree.”

MLA Ganga Singh Kushwaha said that members of the community will be able to obtain an education. By doing so, it will present a new direction for the country.

Members of the transgender community expressed their delight over the opening of the university.

Guddi Kumar said: “I am happy that we will be educated and get respect in the society.

“Education has power and I am sure it will not only change our lives but also the lives of others.”

Education is the one factor which can give one a dignified place in society no matter which social class, caste or community they come from.

The announcement of this new initiative is a step in the right direction for India.
