“What’s wrong with two consenting adults choosing to live together"
Bangladeshi actress Zinat Sanu Swagata is facing a legal notice after revealing she was in a live-in relationship before getting married.
The actress recently opened up about her personal life, shedding light on her journey from a painful divorce to finding love again.
Her candid revelations have sparked public debate and now, potential legal troubles.
At an event, Swagata revealed that she and her current husband, Dr Hasan Azad, lived together before tying the knot.
While the decision was supported by her family, her statement drew criticism, with some accusing Swagata of promoting live-in relationships.
Supreme Court lawyer Muhammad Mesbah Uddin Chowdhury issued a legal notice on behalf of a man named Ariful Khabir.
He demanded that Swagata retract her statement and issue a public apology.
In response to the controversy, Swagata clarified:
“I wanted to get to know the person I planned to marry.
“After my first marriage failed, I needed to be sure I wasn’t stepping into the same situation again.
“What’s wrong with two consenting adults choosing to live together to understand each other better?
“My first marriage failed, and I was left with fears and doubts about marriage. What if I had to face the same abuse again?
“What if history repeated itself? That’s why we decided to understand each other better before committing to marriage.”
Zinat Sanu Swagata was previously married to Rashed Zaman for seven years until their separation.
She claimed that she faced both mental and physical abuse, which ultimately led to divorce.
After three years of healing, she found love again with Dr Azad.
The couple married on January 24, 2024, in a heartwarming ceremony attended by loved ones at Gausul Azam Jame Masjid.
Reflecting on societal progress, Swagata said: “Earlier, husbands were solely responsible for the household.
“Now, however, both partners share that responsibility. While there used to be conflict in families, divorce was uncommon.”
“Women endured all kinds of abuse silently. Divorce is becoming more common, and society is gradually accepting it.
“Love marriages, which were once frowned upon, are now widely accepted, with many families supporting them.
“From this viewpoint, I believe that live-in relationships will eventually be seen as normal. Society is progressing.”
Despite the backlash, Swagata has stood firm, stating she has yet to receive any legal notice but will handle the matter if necessary.
