"they promote all the Indian songs, culture and content, what hypocrisy!”
Yasir Hussain has returned to the spotlight with his latest venture, Monkey Business, a theatre production that opened on April 5, 2025.
It will run until April 20, 2025, at the Karachi Arts Council.
The play has delivered endless laughter from attendees, though it hasn’t been without its share of controversy.
The opening night drew a star-studded crowd, including celebrities such as Mehwish Hayat, Ushna Shah, Sonya Hussyn, and Kinza Hashmi.
The media night itself was an extravagant event, with celebrities stepping out in glamorous outfits and eagerly anticipating the show.
Yasir took to Instagram to share his excitement, noting that the first show was a full house.
He wrote: “5 se 20 April Arts Council MONKEY BUSINESS.
“What a start, Karachi! The first show of Monkey Business was a full house of laughs and love.
“We’re performing till 20th April at Arts Council, don’t miss the madness!”
Despite the excitement surrounding the play, Yasir has attracted some backlash on social media.
The play features Bollywood songs like ‘Saki Saki’ and ‘Say Shava Shava’, which has sparked outrage.
Users felt that Yasir was contradicting his vocal stance against Indian content.
Critics have pointed out his apparent hypocrisy, with one user commenting:
“They criticise Indian content on TV, but in their private parties and dramas, they promote all the Indian songs, culture and content, what hypocrisy!”
While this controversy has cast a shadow over the play, Monkey Business continues to entertain audiences.
The comedic antics, including Yasir and co-star Umer Alam in women’s clothing and dancing to popular Bollywood hits, have kept the crowd laughing.
Yasir’s honest and humorous approach to his own anxiety before the show added a personal touch to the experience.
In a pre-show interview with his wife, Iqra Aziz, Yasir shared:
“I’m feeling very anxious, why am I so anxious? It’s not nervousness; it’s anxiety.”
Audience reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with many sharing glowing reviews after attending the show.
One guest said:
“Absolutely fantastic, incredible, very refreshing.”
Others praised the play’s humour, saying it provided much-needed joy in difficult times.
One of them commented: “So good to see so many people laughing and enjoying, with so much darkness and negativity around us, it’s excellent to have this entertainment.”
For now, Monkey Business continues to run until April 20 and it remains to be seen how Yasir Hussain will handle the online backlash.
Regardless, the play’s ability to bring laughter and entertainment to Karachi’s theatre scene is undeniable.
