"we present a varied programme of local musicians and singers"
Construction is well underway for Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market, with crews assembling wooden chalets, decorations and festive attractions ahead of its return to the city centre next month.
The city centre is already starting to take on a festive appearance, with the big wheel in place and stalls being built for traders, who will sell everything from bratwurst sausages, schnitzels and pretzels to handmade gifts, ornaments and Christmas decorations.
Recognised as the largest authentic German Christmas market outside Germany and Austria, the event has become one of Birmingham’s top annual attractions.
The Christmas market will officially open on November 5 and run until Christmas Eve.
In addition to food and gifts, visitors can also look forward to live music, with performances from local and German artists throughout the market’s seven-week run.
A spokesperson for Frankfurt Christmas Market said:
“Visitors’ favourite musicians from Germany and Birmingham will be back with lunchtime and evening music sessions Monday to Friday, and all day Saturday and Sunday.
“Monday to Friday lunchtimes and evenings, and Saturday and Sunday evenings, our German house band will entertain you with a mixture of Christmas and family favourites.
“Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 6 pm, we present a varied programme of local musicians and singers with a choice of songs to get us all in the mood for Christmas.”
The entertainment programme will also feature a New Talent Showcase on Monday evenings, giving emerging performers the opportunity to take to the stage.
The two best acts will secure a prime-time performance slot in December.
Choirs from schools, charities and community groups will also be invited to participate in a community music programme on Saturday and Sunday mornings, with the full entertainment schedule and list of performers expected to be announced closer to the opening date.
Opening times for the market:
- Monday to Thursday – 11 am to 9 pm
- Friday – 11 am to 9:30 pm
- Saturday – 10 am to 9:30 pm
- Sunday – 10 am to 9 pm
- Remembrance Sunday (November 8) – 1 pm to 9 pm
The festive attraction has also received recognition beyond the city, recently ranking eighth in Europe in a new list of the best Christmas markets published by Christmas Tree World.
The ranking considered several factors, including Google search volumes, social media activity, December hotel prices, each market’s age, entry fees, the number of stalls and proximity to public transport.
According to the study, Birmingham’s market features around 80 stalls and is just a four-minute walk from Birmingham New Street station.
With preparations now well underway, the return of the market is set to bring shoppers, families and tourists together in the heart of Birmingham for a season of German food, festive shopping and live entertainment.
