After the grand success of the magnum-opus Ponniyin Selvan: I, the makers are all set to begin the post-production work for the second part of the film.

It is speculated that the general release of Ponniyin Selvan: II will be in the summer of 2023.

Sources said the movie will either have its world premiere on April 14 or April 28.

The first part of director Mani Ratnam’s film series, which was released on September 30, 2022, received positive reviews and its reception reached new heights.

The film made more than Rs. 500 Crore (£54 million) at the box office and became the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2022, the fourth highest-grossing Tamil film of all time, and the 15th-highest-grossing Indian film of all time.

Previously, film trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to note the developments of the sequel.

He said it was shot simultaneously with the first Ponniyin Selvan film and would release sometime in 2023.

The storyline is set in 10th century Thanjavur, with the Chola dynasty emperor Chozhar and his sons Aditha Karikalan (played by Vikram) and Arulmozhi Varman – Ponniyin Selvan (Jayam Ravi) who wish to expand their kingdom.

What follows is a series of gruesome wars and conspiracies underlined by power play.

This developed to the introduction of Mandakini (played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in a dual role) and her connection to the story remains a mystery that only the second part will reveal.

The epic period ended with great hype and intrigue surrounding the plot about Aishwarya Rai’s dual role and the mystery of Arul Mozhi Varman (Jayam Ravi) after the ocean battle with Chola’s enemies.

The sequel will undoubtedly be a smash hit given the level of anticipation covering the first film.

According to sources, the final release date of the sequel will be announced by the makers within a month.

The historical drama is based on the epic book of the same name, written by Kalki.

Both parts of Ponniyin Selvan are produced by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions and like the first film, the sequel will also release in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada.

Mani Ratnam and Subaskaran Allirajah produced the movie through Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions respectively.

The film features Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Rahman, and R Parthiban, in the key roles.
