Bollywood actress Shabana Azmi met with a horrific accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Saturday, January 18, 2020, suffering injuries.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is the first of its kind in India. The six-lane access control spans 94.5 kilometres connected Mumbai and Pune.
This has reduced travel time from four hours on the old route to two hours on the expressway.
Reportedly the accident took place around 3.30 pm near Khalapur, almost 60 kilometres from Mumbai.
The actress was travelling in a Tata Safari SUV with her husband Javed Akhtar when their vehicle was hit from behind by a truck.
The lyrist did not suffer any injuries; however, their driver was also injured in the collision.
The Press Trust of India also tweeted the news saying: “Actor Shabana Azmi injured in (a) car accident on Mumbai-Pune Expressway: Police.”

According to police officials: “Shabana Azmi and her driver were injured in an accident near Khalapur on Pune-Mumbai Expressway.
“While they were driving from Pune to Mumbai their vehicle was hit by a truck on (the) expressway.
“Javed Akhtar was also present in the car who is safe. Both the injured have been shifted to MGM Hospital.”
An official from the MGM Hospital Panvel, Maharashtra revealed the state of Shabana Azmi. They said:
“Shabana Azmi has got minor injuries on her nose. No other visible till now.”
“She is right now in a state of shock. Treatment is going on. Condition stable.”
After the news broke out about the accident, filmmaker Hansel Mehta took to Twitter to condemn authorities for the dangerous road conditions.
Over the years, there have been numerous accidents on the expressway. He said:
“The Mumbai-Pune expressway has always been dangerous and there is little or no monitoring to prevent rash driving. Have seen so many terrible accidents there.”
Hansel Mehta continued to wish the for Shabana’s wellbeing as well as urging authorities to improve road safety. He said:
“Hope #ShabanaAzmi is fine. Dear @OfficeofUT please improve safety on this route urgently. It is quite a death trap.”

In addition, Bollywood actress Swara Bhaskar tweeted about Shabana Azmi’s accident. She said:
“Shabana Azmi injured in a road accident on Mumbai-Pune Expressway OMG! (Oh my god). Praying so hard.”
Recently, the 64-year-old actress celebrated Javed Akhtar’s 75th birthday on Friday, 17 January 2020 in a retro-themed party, in Mumbai.
The lavish celebration was attended by the A-listers of Bollywood like Shah Rukh Khan, Farhan Akhtar, Amitabh Bachchan and many more.
We hope Shabana Azmi has a speedy recovery and action is taken by the authorities to improve the safety.
