Veteran actress Shabana Azmi spoke about Kangana Ranaut’s constant attacks on Bollywood and believes that the actress makes “outrageous statements” out of fear that she may no longer be in the headlines.
Kangana has frequently been in the headlines for making remarks about the negative aspects within Bollywood, including nepotism and alleged drug use.
She previously referred to Bollywood as a “gutter“, which drew criticism from fellow Bollywood stars, including Jaya Bachchan.
Now Shabana Azmi has spoken out against Kangana and advised her to stick to acting.
When asked about Kangana’s attack on Bollywood, Shabana called them “outrageous”, saying:
“Kangana has started believing in her own myth. She says she taught feminism to the film industry, she taught it nationalism, I’m glad she spelled that out because nobody else had noticed!
“I think she fears the day when she will no longer be in the headlines and so has to keep making outrageous statements to stay in the news.
“Poor girl, why doesn’t she just do what she is best at, which is acting.”
Shabana also opened up on the unrest in Bollywood that has followed since the tragic death of Sushant Singh Rajput.
She explained: “My primary identity is that of being a Hindi film industry and I am very proud of it.
“Unfortunately, the Hindi film industry is a sitting duck; it is easy to hurl malevolent accusations.
“It is a systematic campaign to divert attention from real issues, failing economy, China border tensions, spiralling Covid cases, and farmers’ agitation by putting the spotlight on the supposed ills of the film industry.”
She added: “So ‘Justice for Sushant’ has given way to ‘Weed out the Druggies’ the goal post keeps changing. Instead of focusing on mental health as a serious issue in our society, it’s sensationalism at play.”
Shabana said that Bollywood has its issues but it was unfair to paint the entire industry with the same brush.
“There are many socially committed outspoken people too, does the entire industry gets bathed in a halo because of them?”
In the past, Kangana labelled Shabana “anti-national”.
Kangana’s sister Rangoli Chandel had previously claimed that Shabana’s husband Javed Akhtar called Kangana to his home and “intimidated” and “threatened” her to apologise to Hrithik Roshan.
On the work front, Shabana Azmi has resumed shooting a period series.
The actress even took to Instagram and shared a photo of her and several crew members wearing PPE suits.
Shabana revealed that as part of the new series, she also performed some intense action scenes.
