"it was just a lot of officers in the area looking for him."
A US Indian man was arrested in California for allegedly shooting his girlfriend dead in a mall’s parking garage.
According to Roseville Police, Simranjit Singh and Harpreet Kaur arrived at the mall on the morning of August 19, 2023.
On the third floor of the parking garage, the 29-year-old shot her and fled the scene, leaving the gun in the garage.
Singh was apprehended by police near a shop across the street from the mall.
Lieutenant Chris Ciampa said that immediately after the shooting, Singh went shopping and bought a shirt with cash.
The police report stated he “changed into it, put the old shirt in a shopping bag and asked to leave the store. It was in lockdown due to the active shooter situation”.
Lieutenant Ciampa said: “Through eyewitness accounts and descriptions and his last known direction of travel, it was just a lot of officers in the area looking for him.”
Police also interviewed eyewitnesses and checked Westfield Galleria’s surveillance cameras.
Lieutenant Ciampa added: “They have an extensive security system, and we are working with them. There are cameras in the garage.”
Singh was arrested and was booked in Placer County Jail for homicide.
A police spokesperson said: “The suspect was detained very quickly, that’s kind of with eyewitness accounts, with the help of security.
“We were able to locate him very quickly across the street and not on the mall property.
“There is no longer a threat or safety concern to the mall or customers.
“Police will remain on scene to investigate the incident. We will provide more information after the investigation.”
It was reported that a second person of interest was questioned and later released.
Singh’s girlfriend Harpreet Kaur was originally from Ludhiana.
She moved to Malaysia in 2014 in the hope of a better life. Harpreet worked in various jobs but in recent years, she started blogging and soon amassed a social media following.
During her time in Malaysia, she met Singh and they became friends.
They soon started dating and moved to the United States in March 2023.
According to her family, the US Indian man promised to marry her but after moving to the US, he displayed controlling behaviour towards Harpreet, imposing restrictions on her social activities.
Harpreet’s mother Gurmit Kaur said:
“Malaysia has been much better and more prosperous for our family than America which snatched our daughter from us.”
