"I wish the creators had the courtesy to mention my name."
Actor and filmmaker Shamoon Abbasi has accused the team behind Jinn Ki Shaadi Unki Shaadi of erasing his writing contributions.
The HUM TV production, starring Wahaj Ali and Sehar Khan, currently lists Syed Nabeel as writer and Saife Hasan as director.
On both the HUM TV website and YouTube uploads, Abbasi’s name is absent despite his claim of significant creative involvement.
In a detailed Facebook post, Abbasi stated that he not only developed the screenplay but also suggested the title.
He thanked audiences worldwide for embracing the project, yet criticised the makers for omitting his name from the credits.
Abbasi alleged he invested four months shaping the story, working alongside another writer while dictating major narrative details.
He said: “I wish the creators had the courtesy to mention my name if not now (as the director who created this amazing project to direct it), but as the screenplay writer.
“After working four months on the project with a writer dictating every scene and track. But I guess it’s a lesson learned, never give away your hard work to anyone without a plan.”
According to him, his intention had been to direct the drama, which was conceived originally under his creative guidance.
He argued that his name was still present in the scripts distributed to actors during filming on set.
Clarifying his stance, Abbasi said the post was meant for awareness, not hostility, although evidence was readily available.
He claimed he could provide multiple forms of proof if challenged, asserting ownership of both story and screenplay.
Expressing some satisfaction, Abbasi said the drama nonetheless injected freshness into an industry struggling with repetitive and stale formulas.
He stressed that Jinn Ki Shaadi Unki Shaadi reflects his storytelling approach, which successfully resonated with audiences across Pakistan.
The HUM TV project features an ensemble cast including Arslan Naseer, Romaisa Khan, Syed Jibran, Nadia Afgan, and Tamkenat Mansoor.
Other actors such as Laiba Butt, Sidra Niazi, Irfan Motiwala, and Tamkenat Mansoor also play crucial roles in drama.
Shamoon Abbasi maintained that despite the credit controversy, he felt grateful for the recognition the project had received from viewers.
He wrote: “[I] would like to thank all the audiences around the world that are liking my serial Jinn Ki Shaadi Unki Shaadi (title also given by me) as well as my story and screenplay.
“The serial is being liked by a large audience.”
He concluded by hinting at lessons learned, advising creators to safeguard intellectual property instead of blindly trusting without safeguards.
