The makers of Shaakuntalam released the trailer of the film starring Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Dev Mohan on January 9, 2023, in a grand event in Hyderabad.
The film features Samantha in her most ethereal self in what looks like an epic retelling of a chapter from the Mahabharata.
The event was attended by Samantha Ruth Prabhu, director Gunasekhar, Dev Mohan and others.
The trailer also introduces Allu Arjun‘s daughter Allu Arha in a key role.
The trailer opens with birds carrying a baby, while in the background, we can hear a voiceover introducing the abandoned baby girl as Shakuntala (Samantha), born to Menaka and Vishwamithra.
The trailer reveals that Shakuntala is born with a purpose.
It also introduces King Dushyant (Dev Mohan), who falls in love with Shakuntala when he sees her in the forest for the first time.
The rest of the trailer provides a glimpse of Shakuntala’s hardship after the curse of Rishi Durvasa, which made King Dushyant forget his love for Shakuntala.
Towards the end of the trailer, Allu Arjun’s daughter Allu Arha is introduced as Shakuntala and Dushyant’s son Bharat.
In the scene, little Bharat is seen riding on a lion’s back.
Meanwhile, this is Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s first big event in public after she was diagnosed with Myositis.
She looked stunning at the trailer launch in a sheer white saree. She accessorised her look by wearing glasses.
During the launch, Samantha turned emotional when director Gunasekhar recalled the team’s journey.
He thanked Samantha Ruth Prabhu for joining them at the trailer launch.
The film, a mythological drama, is based on Kalidasa’s Abhijnana Shakuntalam.
The story revolves around the epic love story of Shakuntala and King Dushyant of Mahabharat.
The movie also features Kabir Bedi, Prakash Raj, Sachin Khedekar, Jisshu Sengupta, Dr M Mohan Babu, Madhubala, Gautami, Aditi Balan and Ananya Nagalla in pivotal roles.
Shaakuntalam will be released in Telugu Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada on February 17, 2023.
Earlier, the film was scheduled to release on November 4, 2022, however, it was postponed owing to the film being chosen to be converted into a 3D format by the makers.
Samantha was last seen in the Telugu film Pushpa, in which she danced to the widely popular song, ‘Oo Antava’.
In Tamil, she was seen in Kaathu Vaakula Rendu Kadhal, a romantic comedy film, co-starring Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi.
