"Hint hint series 2 changes."
Romesh Ranganathan’s new gameshow Parents’ Evening faced criticism just moments after its first episode aired on ITV.
The new series kicked off on November 2, 2024, with a slew of familiar faces including Alison Hammond and her son Aidan, Carol Vorderman with her son Cameron, and Iain Stirling and his mother Alison.
Parents’ Evening is overseen by Romesh’s mother Shanthi.
The family duos had to guess how many answers the other could correctly identify to win money for charity, providing viewers with insights into celebrity parental relationships.
But with brand-new shows come hiccups and viewers were quick to complain about the speed at which the questions disappeared from screens.
Many complained that too much screentime was on the guests’ rather than the questions, preventing them from joining in.
On X, one person urged: “#ParentsEvening keep the questions on screen!”
Another commented: “Just need Romesh and the contestants’ faces in mini screenshots at the bottom of the screen, allow questions to stay on screen longer, too many cutaways from main question options.
“Hint hint series 2 changes.”
A viewer pointed out: “#ParentsEvening quiz shows are usually about letting the home viewer guess the answers but in this case, the questions weren’t on screen long enough for us to have a go.”
Although one person was not a fan of the cutaways, they liked the show:
“Obligatory new game show tweet – I’m liking #ParentsEvening.
“Yeah, the questions should stay on screen somehow and it’s annoying that they don’t – but they can fix that.
“I like the format and it all works otherwise. So far, so good.”
Meanwhile, one person raised an issue with the show’s family dynamic, suggesting:
“Romesh Ranganathan’s Parents’ Evening on ITV is definitely watchable, but I’m yet to see why the pairings need to be parents/children and couldn’t be any kind of pairing – even just friends or celebrity teams.”
Fans were also divided over Alison Hammond’s “ruthless” comments to her son.
Alison seemingly lacked faith in her son’s knowledge as one fumed:
“C’mon Alison give Aidan a chance poor lad.”
Another tweeted: “For f**k sake Alison, poor lad.”
A third added:
“Alison Hammond really should place more confidence in her son’s abilities”.
On the other hand, some saw the funny side.
One viewer said: “Alison Hammond basically saying her son doesn’t know any of the answers has me cackling.”
A comment read: “Haha brilliant isn’t she, very good watching her with her son you see how good her bond is.”
Another person called Alison “savage”.
