"There will be a big step back at 50."
Romesh Ranganathan hinted that he will take a big step back from showbiz when he turns 50.
The comedian made the comments during a recent episode of the Wolf & Owl podcast with fellow comedian Tom Davis.
Since quitting his job as a maths teacher, Romesh has built one of Britain’s most successful comedy careers.
Since breaking through in the early 2010s, he has headlined comedy tours, fronted television programmes, written books and won multiple awards.
However, the comedian indicated he is preparing to reduce his workload.
During the podcast, Tom asked: “You’re quitting at 50, right?”
Romesh replied: “Yeah, I’m 48 now. You’ve got two years left of the podcast.”
Tom joked: “We’ve got two years, and it gets to 50 and then you’re walking away. Like the Hulk…”
Romesh responded: “I’m not really walking away. There will be a big step back at 50.”
Tom reminded him: “You said this at 45!”
Clarifying his comments, Romesh added: “What I’m saying is, I’m doing the things I want to do because I’m building up to the big step back.”
However, Tom was sceptical: “No you’re not.”
Romesh Ranganathan went on to suggest he could still perform occasional live shows, saying he might do gigs “here and there”.
Joking about naming a future tour “The Big Step Back”, he added:
“It’ll be a mini our, and the last date will be on my 50th birthday…
“And then I’ll go ‘It’s been fun guys!'”
As well as comedy, Romesh has presented numerous TV shows such as It’s Not Rocket Science, Just Another Immigrant and Asian Provocateur.
More recently, he succeeded Anne Robinson as host of The Weakest Link.
Other TV shows include Romesh Ranganathan’s Parents’ Evening, Rob & Romesh Vs…, The Ranganation, Can’t Knock the Hustle and A League of Their Own.
Romesh has also appeared as a panellist and guest on shows including Mock the Week, Taskmaster, Would I Lie to You? and Sweat the Small Stuff.
Away from television, Romesh Ranganathan has written several books, including Straight Outta Crawley: Memoirs of a Distinctly Average Human, Lil’ Muffin Drops the Mic and Yasmin Bandara Levels Up!.
He currently hosts the Wolf & Owl podcast alongside Tom Davis and fronts The Romesh Ranganathan Show and For the Love of Hip Hop.
Outside entertainment, Romesh is also a part-owner of Coughlans Bakery.
He has been married to Leesa since 2010 and the couple have three children.
