Batool’s actions had caused the death of a young man

A woman who caused the death of her friend in a high-speed Lamborghini crash on the M62 in West Yorkshire has been jailed for 10 years.

Humaira Batool was driving the hired Lamborghini Urus when she hit a barrier at around 4:20 am on December 21, 2022, causing the vehicle to flip over and burst into flames.

Her passenger, Mohammed Shaan Hussain, suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

Batool was also banned from driving for 10 years after being found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving in September.

During the trial, the court heard Batool reached speeds of up to 143mph after taking her turn behind the wheel of the Lamborghini.

Passing sentence, Judge Ray Singh said Batool’s “conscious decision to drive at extraordinary speed” was particularly dangerous given the weather and visibility conditions.

Batool, who was 22 at the time of the collision, tried to blame Hussain, claiming he had reached over and touched something that caused the car to surge. However, the jury rejected her account.

A full investigation into the crash led to Batool being arrested and charged in January 2024 with causing death by dangerous driving.

Hussain’s death has left his family devastated, with his mother, Nasreen Akhtar, describing him as a “beloved son and cherished brother, a loyal friend and light in all our lives” who was “loved beyond measure”.

In a victim statement read to the court, Ms Akhtar said: “Every day has been a struggle.

“What has made this unbearable pain even worse is the impact of trying to mourn our son when we have had to listen to others try to tarnish him.

“My son was the heartbeat of this home. To lose him suddenly in this horror crash has broken us in ways we cannot put into words.

“He was just 20 years old with his whole life ahead of him, dreams in his heart, and so much love to give. He was a beloved son, a cherished brother, a loyal friend, and a light in all our lives.”

Hussain’s brother, Mohammed Souhail Hussain, said his brother had always put others first, adding:

“Since losing Shaan, our lives have been incredibly difficult. His absence is not something that has become easier with time.”

“It is something we are reminded of every single day.”

Detective Inspector Paul Conroy, of the major collision enquiry team, welcomed the sentence, saying Batool’s actions had caused the death of a young man in the prime of his life, devastating his family and leaving them facing a lifetime of loss.

He said: “When any of us get behind the wheel, we need to accept the responsibility of controlling a machine which can cause devastation if not handled responsibly.

“This especially applies when handling a car of the nature Batool drove that evening.

“Her driving put herself and anyone near her on the motorway at risk and it sadly resulted in the tragedy we have seen in this case.”
