Jagdeep Singh, aged 35, of Leicester, was jailed for eight years for raping a vulnerable woman as she waited for an ambulance.

In the early hours of January 12, 2024, the 21-year-old woman had been on a night out with friends in Leicester city centre.

At her friend’s home, she called for a taxi and waited in Western Road.

As the woman waited, she began to feel unwell and called for an ambulance.

It was during the call that Singh approached the victim and offered to help.

Call handlers alerted police after they heard Singh speaking to the victim.

But when they turned up to Western Road, the woman was not there.

Her parents were also unable to contact her, prompting them to report her as missing.

It was later that morning when the victim contacted her parents to report she had been raped by a man in a flat.

Her description of the flat led officers to Singh, who lived in Harrow Road.

In interviews, he denied forcing the victim into having sex and instead claimed it was consensual.

He also claimed to officers that he had approached her in the first place as he was concerned about her welfare and was actually helping her get to a safe place.

Singh was charged and went to trial at Leicester Crown Court. But on the second day of the trial, he pleaded guilty to raping the woman.

He was jailed for eight years and placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Joe Mulvany said:

“Throughout the investigation, Singh maintained he was innocent and that he did take part in sexual activity with the victim, but it was all consensual.

“We are pleased that he has pleaded guilty and spared the victim the distress of reliving what happened to her in the courtroom.

“This investigation and the process has been in no way easy for her.

“She has shown immense bravery throughout, and we hope she now feels that justice has been done.

“[Singh] preyed on a vulnerable person for his own satisfaction.”

“The victim was not in a fit state to consent to anything and was clearly distressed when he came across her in the street.

“We hope this case and the outcome reassures people and gives victims the courage to come forward and report what’s happened to them.

“We have specialist officers who can help and support you through the process and put you in touch with other support agencies.”
