the parents checked their home's security footage
A disturbing case of child abuse has come to light in Lahore, Pakistan, where a three-month-old baby was reportedly abused by a housemaid.
According to the parents, it was in retaliation for being scolded by them.
The shocking incident occurred in the Northern Cantonment area and was uncovered after the infant’s parents reviewed CCTV footage.
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Saima Kanwal, had been employed to care for the baby.
However, instead of fulfilling her duties, she allegedly subjected the infant to repeated physical abuse.
According to the first information report (FIR) filed by the child’s father, the maid tortured the baby over several days.
According to the report, she was even seen attempting to suffocate the infant by covering the face with a blanket.
The parents grew concerned when their child appeared unwell and cried excessively.
Seeking medical attention, they were informed by doctors that signs of abuse were evident.
Suspecting foul play, the parents checked their home’s security footage, which confirmed the distressing mistreatment.
Shortly after the abuse came to light, Kanwal allegedly stole jewellery and cash from the house and fled.
Authorities launched an investigation and, on February 5, 2025, they tracked the suspect to Bahawalnagar, where she was taken into custody.
She has been handed over to the investigation wing for further legal proceedings.
This case has added to growing concerns over crimes committed by domestic workers.
In January 2025, Karachi police released a list of 110 female domestic workers accused of theft and robbery in homes across the South district.
Authorities have urged residents to verify the backgrounds of housemaids before employment.
They have also been advised to register their details with the police to prevent similar incidents.
As child abuse cases continue to rise, the incident has sparked calls for stricter screening measures for domestic workers.
Many have urged parents not to leave such young children in the care of domestic workers to ensure their safety.

“After that, we never trusted house help.”
