The two families argued about the dowry demands

An Indian man identified as Mohammed Ashfaq bit his mother-in-law’s nose while his father slashed her ear in a dowry dispute. The two men also beat his wife’s father.

The incident took place on Sunday, August 25, 2019, in Nakatia, Uttar Pradesh.

The injured woman was taken to a local hospital. She was later transferred to a hospital in Delhi for surgery.

According to the police, Chand Bi got married to Ashfaq in 2018.

Chand was an employee at the Food Corporation of India (FCI) while Ashfaq worked as a property dealer in Bareilly.

Her father, Gantha Rehman, had given dowry worth Rs. 10 Lakh (£11,400). However, after Chand gave birth to a baby girl, her in-laws demanded a further Rs. 5 Lakh (£5,700).

When Gantha refused to give the money, Ashfaq allegedly beat his wife.

Gantha came to hear about what happened to his daughter and rushed to her home with his wife Gulshan to confront Ashfaq and his family.

The two families argued about the dowry demands and it soon escalated.

Ashfaq, his father Izhaar and other members of his family started attacking Gantha and Gulshan.

The Indian man bit his mother-in-law’s nose while Izhaar took a knife and slashed her ear.

The two men soon fled the scene, leaving Gulshan unconscious. Police officers were informed of the incident and Gulshan was rushed to the hospital.

An FIR was registered at Bareilly Cantonment Police Station under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 326 (voluntarily causing grevious hurt by a dangerous weapon) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code.

The two men and other members of their family are yet to be arrested as Station House Officer Avanish Singh Yadav stated.

He said: “On getting information of the incident, we took the victims to the hospital and ensured their first aid.

“An FIR has been registered against five identified and one unidentified person and the accused will be arrested soon.”

There have been several violent incidents as a result of dowry within India.

A woman and her father were beaten to death by her in-laws over a dowry dispute.

Savitri Devi and her father Rakshpal Gupta had gone to her husband’s house in an attempt to resolve the ongoing dowry disagreement between the families.

However, they were beaten with a hammer before both were strangled to death.

Savitri’s brother, Rahul Gupta, filed a complaint and an FIR was registered against nine people.

When officers visited the house, three of the nine suspects were arrested, but the other six went on the run.
