A 23-year-old man was arrested in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore district for slashing an MBA student’s throat after she refused to talk to him.

The incident occurred in Sanwer town, about 40 kilometres from Indore, on the afternoon of January 30, 2025.

The victim was critically injured and rushed to a private hospital, where she is now in a stable condition.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Umakant Chaudhary, the accused, Aman Sheikh, had been harassing the young woman for years.

He persistently followed her and attempted to engage in conversations.

On the day of the attack, when she refused to respond to him, he confronted her.

An argument ensued and then suddenly, the man assaulted her with a knife.

The victim’s family stated that Sheikh had been bothering her for three years despite multiple warnings.

Following the attack, anger erupted in the town, prompting local Hindu organisations to call for a half-day shutdown on January 31.

Markets and businesses remained closed in protest. However, authorities assured that the situation in Sanwer remained under control.

The public is enraged, with numerous calls for justice on social media.

A user said: “How many more women have to die till this stops? We need stricter laws!”

One said: “India is never going to be safe for women.”

In a similar case, a young woman in Karnataka’s Raichur district was brutally murdered in broad daylight after rejecting a marriage proposal.

The victim, identified as 24-year-old Shifa, was a student pursuing an MSc at a private college in Sindhanoor town.

She commuted daily from Lingasaguru and had known the accused, Mubin, for six years.

According to police, Mubin had developed feelings for Shifa and pressured her to marry him.

When he discovered that her family was arranging her marriage to another man, he became enraged.

On the day of the crime, he followed her to Sindhanoor Government Graduation College.

He stabbed her in the neck and then slit her throat before fleeing.

After committing the murder, Mubin went to a local footwear shop and caused a commotion.

It was reportedly owned by the man Shifa’s family was considering for her marriage.

Mubin then surrendered at the Lingasaguru police station, confessing to the crime.

Superintendent of Police Puttamadaiah visited the crime scene and ordered heightened security measures around colleges to prevent further such incidents.

Authorities have registered a case and are interrogating the accused. Investigations in both cases are ongoing.
