A bizarre case of celebratory gunfire gone wrong involved an Indian husband accidentally shooting his wife whilst celebrating one month of marriage in the bedroom.

The incident happened in Vadodara, Gujarat.

Officers from Makapura Police Station launched an investigation into the shooting, which resulted in a 20-year-old woman being struck in the eye, forcing her to undergo surgery.

Jay Singh Sikligar was booked for attempted murder after a primary investigation found that his wife Komal Kaur was injured in a shooting in their bedroom.

The Indian husband had marked one month of marriage with gunfire. But a stray bullet hit his wife.

Earlier on November 27, 2023, Makarpura Police Station received a call from a private hospital regarding an incident of “alleged firing in a public place”, leaving Komal injured.

As the investigation began, police determined that the “public firing” was a story made up by Jay’s family to cover up an incident that had occurred in their home on the night of November 26.

Inspector JN Parmar said: “The accused and his family visited three hospitals on Sunday night, beginning with SSG hospital, where they first narrated the story of a bike accident.

“But since the bullet was lodged in the victim’s eye, the hospital asked for more details.

“They then went to a private hospital, where they said that unidentified persons had opened fire at Pratapnagar bridge during an outing of the couple.

“However, when we examined CCTV camera footage, we found no such firing had taken place.”

The family visited three hospitals before Komal was admitted to one where she underwent surgery.

Inspector Parmar told The Indian Express:

“The conduct of the victim’s husband was suspicious.

“When their house and bedroom were examined by forensic experts, there was clear evidence that the firing had occurred inside the house.

“The team recovered an empty bullet case.”

“Thereafter, the accused confessed that he had fired the bullet from a country pistol that was in his possession.

“As the victim is still unconscious, we are yet to ascertain the sequence of events.

“But primarily, we have learnt that the accused was enchanted by the idea of becoming a gangster. How the firearm went off is a matter of investigation.”

After a complaint was filed by Komal’s father, an FIR was lodged.

Jay has been booked under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 114 (crime committed when abettor present) of the Indian Penal Code and also under the Arms Act.
