Just one day after her wedding, an Indian bride took her own life. The tragedy happened in Gill Enclave in the city of Patiala, Punjab.
The 25-year-old committed suicide by hanging herself. She was identified as Ritu.
It was reported that she was home alone when she took her own life.
On Tuesday, February 11, 2020, Ritu got married to a man named Rajinder Kumar. He lived in a rented apartment in the area and worked at a stationery shop.
According to investigating officer ASI Balkar Singh, they had a traditional ceremony on Tuesday but on Wednesday afternoon, Ritu complained of a headache.
Rajinder had been at work at the time. He returned home and gave her some medicine. He advised her to get some rest before he returned to work.
Ritu’s mother-in-law also went out to run errands.
A short while later, the Indian bride got up and tied one end of a scarf to the ceiling fan. She tied the other end around her neck and stood up on a chair.
When Rajinder returned home from work that evening, he found his wife hanging from the ceiling fan.
He immediately called the police. Officers arrived at the scene and took the body down. Ritu’s body was then sent for a post-mortem.
The police have said that action will be taken based on the results of the post-mortem.
Officers spoke to the deceased’s father who told them that his daughter had been suffering from mental health issues.
He explained that Ritu had been married before but got divorced. Her marriage to Rajinder was her second.
Based on the father’s statement, a case was registered under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
An investigation is underway to find out why Ritu decided to take her own life.

The in-laws had demanded a car and enough money to build a house. The bride was also treated like a maid.
On January 17, 2020, she called her father and explained her ordeal before putting down the phone.
Her in-laws discovered her body and called the police. Following a post-mortem, the body was handed to her family.
Based on her father’s complaint, a case of dowry murder was registered against the husband, mother-in-law and aunt-in-law.
