"If you are thinking of calling the police, just look what happens."

Cajitan Dsouza escaped a prison sentence after he carried out a three-month campaign of abuse on his wife.

The Old Bailey heard that on May 8, 2023, Dsouza suspected his wife was having an affair after he found a message sent by her to a male friend using an affectionate nickname.

He became jealous and launched a degrading campaign of abuse and surveillance.

This included monitoring his wife’s location with a tracker, watching her outside her workplace and regularly checking her messages.

Dsouza frequently beat her and interrogated her all night about the man he wrongly believed was a love rival.

On July 30, Dsouza waited outside his wife’s work and watched her phoning her supervisor.

He then demanded she give her mobile phone to see who she had spoken to. She refused and walked home by herself.

Later at their home in Hanworth, London, Dsouza told his wife:

“If you are thinking of calling the police, just look what happens. I will kill you.”

Too scared to sleep with her husband, the victim went to her mother-in-law’s bed. But her husband followed her and began arguing with her.

When she tried to leave the room and threatened to call the police, Dsouza blocked her path and goaded her.

He then punched his wife in the face, leaving her with swollen eyes, facial cuts and bruising. The court heard he also kneed and kicked her.

The victim was able to escape but Dsouza pursued her. His father called the police.

He later told police that he heard his daughter-in-law screaming. When he entered the room, he saw his son kneeing her in the face and kicking out at his own mother.

Tessa Donovan, prosecuting, said:

“Mr Dsouza said he did not care and when he was released he would harm her again.”

Ms Donovan read the victim’s impact statement:

“I feel worried and scared. I feel nervous when I come home from work, will he allow me to sleep?

“He expects me to call him every time I have a break at work.

“I have to eat my food really quickly in five minutes so I can call him back. I’m very tired because my husband does not let me sleep, asking me the same questions.”

According to Ms Donovan, Dsouza’s behaviour was “clearly intended to humiliate and demean” his wife.

She said the offences were aggravated by the domestic context as the couple’s two children and Dsouza also live at the same address.

Dsouza’s defence barrister said his behaviour were “completely out of character”.

He added that Dsouza earns £30,000 a year as a traffic warden as the sole breadwinner.

Judge Judy Khan KC said it was “refreshing” that Dsouza had accepted the prosecution’s version of events.

MyLondon reported that Dsouza was sentenced to 14 months imprisonment, suspended for two years.

He was ordered to undertake 150 hours of unpaid work, 30 days of Rehabilitation Activity Requirement, and an order to complete a better relationships course.

Dsouza also received eight months for assault causing actual bodily harm and six months for coercive and controlling behaviour, to run consecutively, and 20 days for the assault by beating on his own mum, to run concurrently.
