"I just felt really overwhelmed by a lot of intrusive thoughts."
During a murder trial, a father who killed his three-week-old son claimed it was because he was gay, in custody footage shown to a jury.
After Kadees Mohammed’s arrest at his home in Sparkhill, Birmingham, he told police:
“I killed my son today.”
It is believed Mohammed inflicted fatal injuries to baby Mohammed Ibrahim in the early hours of October 18, 2022.
The father denies murder and manslaughter as well as inflicting grievous bodily harm to his wife and mother on the same night.
Birmingham Crown Court heard that there is no dispute Mohammed attacked all three and caused the death of his son. But the father has relied on the legal defence of “insanity”.
The jury was shown a CCTV compilation of the series of events leading to Ibrahim’s death, including Mohammed walking to the nearby mosque on three separate occasions on October 17.
The footage also showed the arrival of Mohammed’s sister and brother-in-law as well as paramedics in the evening due to his alleged behaviour prompting concerns.
He was taken to A&E at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at around 11 pm.
Whilst there, Mohammed sent a WhatsApp message that read:
“I just felt really overwhelmed by a lot of intrusive thoughts.”
He sent another text, stating that he had a breakdown and felt suicidal earlier in the day.
Mohammed stayed at A&E for around 40 minutes before leaving without being seen.
Residential CCTV from Dovey Road captured the screams of a male after 3 am, when it is alleged Mohammed killed Ibrahim.
Harpreet Sandhu KC, prosecuting, said:
“You may have heard with relative clarity words likely to have been said by the defendant, in particular Allahu Akbar.”
Later, Mohammed’s wife Mehwish Mubashir ran out of the home and banged on a neighbour’s door.
Police arrived at 3:51 am. By this time, Ibrahim had been taken next door.
Police body-cam footage captured Mohammed sitting shirtless on a sofa. As he was detained, he said “I love Allah” and repeated “Allah, Allah”.
At one point, Mohammed said:
“I love my mother more than I love Allah.”
Upon his arrival at Perry Barr Custody Suite, Mohammed again repeated “Allah”. As he was being booked in he said:
“I can’t believe I killed my son.”
Whilst speaking to an officer, Mohammed said:
“I’m scared you guys are going to kill me. I’m scared you are going to hurt me.
“You’re not going to hurt me? Because I’m English? I love this country so much.”
At a later point, Mohammed was heard saying:
“You know what it is? It’s because I’m gay, Muslim and married. I killed my son today.”
The trial continues.
