"Such a good character wasted for nothing."
Kheerat Panesar was sentenced to life in prison, leaving BBC EastEnders viewers confused.
In November 2022, Kheerat (Jaz Singh Deol) decided to take the blame for the murder of Ranveer Gulati, of which Suki was the prime suspect.
As he was taken away by police, Kheerat made an emotional farewell to girlfriend Stacey (Lacey Turner).
After falsely confessing to the murder of Ranveer to protect his mother, Kheerat was sentenced to life in prison.
Suki was left crushed as she was informed by Eve of his life sentence.
Bursting into tears, she crumbled to the ground at the shock of the news.
On social media, fans expressed their shock.
One said: “Off-screen something is bound to happen to ensure Kheerat is eventually released! It can’t be right his life sentence remains!”
Another wrote: “How did Kheerat get life when he didn’t even do it.”
A third said: “So Kheerat got life in prison poor Suki.”
But many fans on social media highlighted a major blunder within the story.
They pointed out that given that there is no evidence to prove Kheerat committed murder other than the confession, there is no way he would actually get a life sentence with that little evidence.
Blasting the Eastenders makers for poor writing, one said:
“Kheerat getting life when there is no evidence that ties him to it is another example of sh**** writing from the soap.
“Such a good character wasted for nothing.”
Another viewer commented: “So Kheerat got life sadly but what about Gray [Atkins] and Janine [Butcher]?
“Never actually found out with either of them? And Gray’s did a lot worse.
“Leave it totally open-ended in case they ever wanna bring them back yet again potentially? Even it’s just a recast?”
It continued to leave viewers wondering how Kheerat managed to land the harshest sentence possible when he had no involvement in the murder.
One person said: “How did Kheerat get life when he didn’t even do it?”
Another added:
“How did Kheerat get life when there’s nothing proving it’s him?”
One person was left completely puzzled, tweeting:
“I have no idea why Kheerat got a life sentence.”
Since entering Walford in 2019, businessman Kheerat was a fan favourite.
He was a member of the Panesar family, alongside the Jags (Amar Adatia), Vinny (Shiv Jalota), his sister Ash (Gurlaine Kaur Garcha) and their mother (Balvinder Sopal).
Given that Jaz has left the long-running soap, it is unlikely that his character will appear again.
