A delivery driver who died after reportedly being ambushed by a machete-wielding gang has been named as Aurman Singh.

The 23-year-old had been a passenger in the DPD van when he “suffered a slash wound” on August 21, 2023, in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

Police and emergency services rushed to the scene but could not save Aurman, who lived in Smethwick, West Midlands.

On August 22, 2023, four men aged 22, 24, 24 and 26 were arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.

West Mercia Police said a fifth person was arrested on August 23 in Peterborough on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Paying tribute to Aurman, his family said:

“There are no words that could ever explain the impact this tragedy has had on me and my family.

“Today a mother will grow old without her son.

“A sister will grow up without her brother.

“We don’t want what has happened to us to happen to another family.

“We would like to thank the police for conducting their investigation diligently and supporting us through this tough time.”

Residents spoke of their shock after witnessing the aftermath of the violent attack.

One said: “I saw four men, carrying a variety of weapons, jump into the Audi and two others get into the front of a white Mercedes.

“None of them looked as though they had stolen anything.

“They didn’t seem to be carrying any parcels from the van.

“They just had weapons which looked to be a machete, baseball bat and what appeared to be some sort of shovel.

“The cars did a three-wheel turn and they sped off.

“One of the men shouted something before they escaped but I couldn’t hear what they said.”

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Bellamy of West Mercia Police said:

“Our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of Aurman at this difficult time.

“Our investigation is underway with officers carrying out a number of enquiries to establish the circumstances that led to Aurman’s murder.

“We know Aurman was a delivery person however at this stage we do not believe this was the motive for his death and we are not investigating this as a robbery.

“We believe those involved are known to each other and are not local to Shrewsbury or the wider West Mercia Police area.

“We have so far arrested five people in connection with the murder and are progressing all other lines of enquiry to locate and arrest outstanding suspects.”

The four men – all from the Black Country – have been charged with murder. They are:

  • Arshdeep Singh
  • Jagdeep Singh
  • Shivdeep Singh
  • Manjot Singh

The fifth person has been released on police bail.
