Legendary folk singer the late Kuldeep Manak was honoured
Saturday 6th of October 2012 was a date that many aficionados of British Asian and Bhangra music had circled in their diaries; the moment of truth for winners of the BritAsia 2012 TV Music Awards.
Excitement reached almost to fever pitch as people crowded into the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham to celebrate another fantastic year of achievement in the British Asian Music Industry.
Championing talent from the UK and abroad, BritAsia TV showcases and highlights the best in the business, while catering to those who prefer less traditional music forms, such as RnB, Urban music, Hip-Hop and now, Dub-Step.
This year, the awards had fourteen separate categories, including one that was newly introduced this year, that of Best Dressed Act. It was anyone’s guess as to what could happen and who would win which award; it was a particularly close ceremony with plenty of surprises.
The awards opened the doors to widely respected pioneers and celebrities including the famous cricket player Monty Panesar and Xfactor’s Misha B and The Risk.
The atmosphere was electric and DESIblitz was present on this momentous night. Hosted by TV personality Hardeep Singh Kohli who kept audiences entertained with his humour, many glitzy and vibrant performances took place on stage by superstars such as Manmohan Waris, Jazzy B, Malkit Singh and Balwinder Safri, amongst others.
Roach Killa after successful concerts amongst Bollywood stars in Mumbai, returned to pick up Best Urban Act on the night. Dr Zeus bagged two for Best Asian Music Producer and Best Single ‘Jugni Ji’ a remix of the Coke Studio track sung by Arif Lohar. The Best Female Act was won by newcomer Kunika Kapoor for singing on the ‘Jugni Ji’ track. Amrinder Gill the notably gifted singer took the award for Best Album, Judaa. Jazzy B won Best Male Act.
There were special moments on the night to remember artists no longer with us. Legendary folk singer the late Kuldeep Manak was honoured by Manmahon Waris, AS Kang and Sukshinder Shinda. A celebration of the huge contribution made by the late Dev Raj Jassal to the Bhangra music scene as a songwriter was highlighted with the Lifetime Achievement Award. RDB brothers Surj and Manj, Terry Mardi and many other artists paid their respects to Kuly Rai, the third member of RDB, who lost his life to a brain tumour in May 2012.
