"I wanted a character that reflects our own cultural setting"

Veteran Bangladeshi actor Mosharraf Karim is taking on a new challenge in the upcoming web-film Mirza.

It is set to premiere on the OTT platform Bongo on May 23, 2025.

Stepping away from conventional roles, Karim will portray an eccentric, older detective.

His character is reportedly designed to break stereotypes associated with the crime-solving genre.

Directed by Sumon Anowar, Mirza offers a refreshing take on detective narratives.

It introduces a lead who relies not on physical prowess but mental agility.

Rather than chasing criminals through alleys or engaging in dramatic fight scenes, the titular character uses his wit, observational skills, and sharp intellect.

The recently released poster showcases the actor in a modest cap and glasses, fully embodying the character.

It’s captioned: “Aitachhe Mirza, criminal bhagi ja!” – a playful warning to criminals to beware.

Bongo also posted the teaser for the upcoming film.

Anowar shared the inspiration behind creating a detective like Mirza.

He said: “We don’t really have our own iconic sleuths like Sherlock Holmes or Feluda.

“With Mirza, I wanted a character that reflects our own cultural setting, someone ageing, imperfect in appearance, but unmatched in insight.”

The cast also features Parsa Evana, Arfan Mredha Shiblu, Tamanna Haque Borna, Shoumi, and Dilruba Doyel.

They will contribute to a storyline that blends humour, suspense, and drama. Anowar praised his cast, particularly Karim’s performance.

He added: “Mosharraf Karim was brilliant in the titular role. Everyone brought their A-game, and the shoot itself was a joyful experience.”

While the detective genre in Bangladeshi content has seen a modest rise, Mirza aims to distinguish itself by stepping away from glamorised action tropes.

The story leans into everyday realism, portraying a character who may not run fast but thinks faster than anyone else in the room.

This grounded approach might appeal to audiences craving more nuanced storytelling.

With its release around the corner, expectations are building.

The film could mark the beginning of a new franchise, should audiences embrace the character and style.

Anowar noted:

“Every filmmaker feels their latest work is their best.”

“With Mirza, we’ve taken a bold step into the detective genre, and we’re excited to see how audiences respond.”

Meanwhile, Mosharraf Karim continues to stay in demand.

He’s also preparing for the launch of Bohemian Ghora, an original series on Hoichoi, keeping his slate as busy as ever.
