Acclaimed Bangladeshi filmmaker Shahnewaz Kakoli has suffered a stroke and is currently receiving treatment at Universal Medical College Hospital in Mohakhali.

Doctors confirmed that the left side of her body has been partially paralysed and she remains under close observation.

Kakoli had been struggling with several chronic health conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and thyroid disorders in recent years.

According to family sources, she began feeling unwell on October 12, 2025, and complained of numbness in her hands and feet.

She was also unable to eat properly during the day, and as her condition worsened by evening, her relatives rushed her to the hospital.

Dr Ashish Kumar Chakraborty, Managing Director and her attending physician, confirmed the stroke and provided details of her current treatment plan.

He said: “She suffered an ischemic stroke. A CT scan has been performed, and physiotherapy has already been initiated.

“She will remain hospitalised for now. The next few days are critical, and we are monitoring her condition very closely.”

The news has left many in the film industry and beyond deeply concerned, with colleagues and fans posting messages of support online.

Kakoli made her mark with the 2012 film Uttorer Sur, which earned her wide acclaim both nationally and internationally.

The film was featured at festivals in Goa, Kolkata, and Mumbai and won three major National Film Awards in Bangladesh.

She received recognition for Best Film, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Child Artist, establishing her as a leading face in Bangladeshi cinema.

Her follow-up project Nodijon, released in 2015, further solidified her reputation for telling intimate and socially conscious stories.

Beyond cinema, Kakoli has contributed significantly to the television industry through drama direction, script writing, and art direction.

Her deep understanding of human emotion and rural life has earned her admiration across both urban and rural audiences.

Hospital sources have stated that no expected discharge date has been set yet as doctors continue evaluating her recovery progress.

While the situation remains serious, there is hope that her condition may gradually improve.
