“During Covid, I didn’t really have a lot of friends in life"
Internet personality Apoorva Mukhija is one of India’s fastest-rising influencers, boasting 1.5 million Instagram followers.
Better known as The Rebel Kid, Apoorva is known for her vlogs, which are characterised by her humour.
She initially gained fame for her comedy videos. Over the years, her content evolved into travel and lifestyle vlogs.
In 2023, Apoorva was featured in Forbes India’s Top 100 Creators, being ranked number two.
Apoorva’s internet fame has seen her transition into acting, making her debut in the 2023 series Who’s Your Gynac?
Her journey from influencer to actress has come in a short space of time.
The Beginning of Content Creation

Apoorva Mukhija’s venture into content creation came in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic.
She initially created YouTube videos but could not remain consistent. Apoorva then switched to creating short-form content on Instagram.
Apoorva, who graduated from Manipal University, admitted that she had no specific passion growing up but she was always the person who made the group laugh.
This soon became her full-time job.
Confessing that Instagram became her friend during the pandemic, Apoorva said:
“During Covid, I didn’t really have a lot of friends in life because I was in a co-dependent relationship, I didn’t have anyone to speak to so I started speaking to the camera.”
Her content was a success from the beginning and this motivated her to continue.
When TikTok was banned in India, Apoorva began making Instagram Reels.
The Prevalence of Content Creation

People turning to online content creation is common and this has led to internet personalities breaking through all the time.
Apoorva Mukhija acknowledged that there is a lot of competition in this field.
She believes that every person is a content creator who is trying to provide a glimpse of their life for their fans, adding that this boom came in the past two years.
Apoorva told India.com:
“Yes, the competition is slightly tougher than what it was.
“The earlier you start, the better it is.”
However, Apoorva believes that for budding content creators, audiences have also increased so one can find their audience if they stay consistent.
Acting

Apoorva Mukhija’s popularity as an influencer has opened up new opportunities.
This includes acting and she made her debut in the 2023 series Who’s Your Gynac?
Starring Saba Azad, the show is about Dr Vidushi Kothari, a 28-year-old gynaecologist who struggles with her personal and professional problems while solving clinical cases that come her way.
Apoorva featured in one episode and she revealed that she has always been a fan of drama.
She said: “I have always been fond of drama, I even used to cry at the top of my voice to get my parents’ attention.”
The influencer was in an acting group at university and also performed in a lot of theatre productions.
However, she stated that acting on stage is very different to acting in a film or TV show.
Apoorva explained that acting requires a lot of hard work, discipline and persistence, and it’s a lot more than just looking glamorous.
There has been a discussion over influencers entering acting and according to Apoorva, actors are usually unhappy with influencers acting because they feel threatened.
She said:
“When it comes to fellow actors, they tend not to like influencers at all because they are like, ‘They’re taking our jobs’.”
Apoorva revealed that she was not treated any better because she was an established influencer.
She elaborated: “I wasn’t treated better, I might have been looked down upon but not better, however, my producers and director have always been amazing.”
Dealing with Social Media Trolls

Like other social media influencers, Apoorva Mukhija has also had her fair share of internet trolls.
She said that she has had to deal with it to such an extent that it changed her perception of herself.
When a YouTuber called Dank Rishu trolled Apoorva, it caused a ripple effect and others in his community started trolling her.
The trolling also included cruel remarks about her mother and brother.
Recalling the hate, Apoorva said: “At that time my love life was also not doing that great, didn’t have a lot of friends also, the only good thing was my Instagram and it really got to me.
“I stopped creating content for 8 months, I just vanished.”
Apoorva Mukhija’s journey from social media influencer to venturing into acting is a testament to the power of adaptability, perseverance and authentic engagement.
