"Her dress looks like a bath towel wrapped around her."
Akshata Murty’s glamorous appearance at the British Museum Gala drew widespread attention, though much of it came from online trolls criticising her bold fashion choice.
The Pink Ball, co-chaired by Isha Ambani on October 18, brought together a host of celebrities and notable figures for a glittering evening in London.
Akshata, attending alongside her husband and former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, opted for a striking pink and red striped gown.
Her strapless silk column dress featured a convex cut neckline, a figure-hugging silhouette and an ankle-length hem.
She paired the outfit with a gold mang tika, an embellished silver potli bag, earrings, bracelets and red pointed heels adorned with bows.
For her glam, Akshata styled her hair in centre-parted loose waves and chose a deep wine red lipstick, feathered brows, blush-tinted cheeks, glowing highlighter and a dewy base.
Despite her elegant efforts, her ensemble quickly became the subject of online mockery.
One Instagram user criticised the colour combination, writing: “What’s pink and red and white inside? A smoothie that lost the will to blend.”
Another commented, “Goodness, what are you wearing?” while one suggested, “Please fire your stylist!”
Her jewellery also faced criticism, with a user commenting: “What is this Jugad mangtika…still can’t believe she or her stylist does all this to the daughter of the Infosys founder.”
Others compared her gown to household items, with one remarking, “We have the same curtains in our home lol,” while another joked, “Her dress looks like a bath towel wrapped around her.”
Not all reactions were negative, however.
Some users admired her confidence, with one writing: “Only she can pull off that dress.”
Despite the online backlash, Akshata appeared composed and appreciative of the occasion.
Sharing photos from the event on Instagram, she wrote:
“Last night we had the privilege of joining the very first Pink Ball at @britishmuseum.”
“It was an extraordinary celebration of culture that highlighted how vital museums are as guardians of our past, as well as champions of discovery.
“For both of us, as supporters of the arts and heritage, it was a reminder of why great institutions matter: each artefact, each story, each gallery opens doors to new possibilities.
“Thank you to the curators, staff and everyone who made the evening possible. Here’s to museums around the world leading us forward.”
Her caption reflected admiration for the arts and heritage, even as the internet continued to debate her divisive fashion moment.
