“Lyrics in both tracks violate the dignity of women"

The Punjab State Women’s Commission has launched an inquiry into Punjabi music stars Karan Aujla and Yo Yo Honey Singh.

The body alleges that both artists have used derogatory language against women in their songs.

The commission took notice of the issue and has written to the state Director General of Police (DGP), urging immediate action.

Both singers have also been summoned to appear before the commission on August 11, 2025.

A statement from the commission confirmed it had taken strong exception to lyrics in songs by both artists, citing them as disrespectful towards women.

According to reports, Commission Chairperson Raj Lali Gill raised concerns over how women are portrayed in the tracks under scrutiny.

She said in her letter to the DGP: “Lyrics in both tracks violate the dignity of women and propagate a disrespectful image of them in popular culture.”

Gill has asked the police to investigate and submit a detailed report by the same date as the summons.

The controversy began following the release of Karan Aujla’s latest single ‘MF Gabhru’. The track has already amassed over 34 million views in less than a week.

Despite its popularity, it has drawn criticism for allegedly misogynistic lyrics and themes. Lyrics from the song have circulated online, with many social media users expressing outrage.

Attention has also turned to an older track by Yo Yo Honey Singh titled ‘Millionaire’. The commission claims this song also contains language that disrespects women.

According to the commission, both tracks “promote harmful stereotypes and use explicit language that crosses acceptable boundaries”.

In a statement, the commission said:

“Music is a powerful cultural force and must not be misused to degrade or demean any section of society, especially women.”

This move signals growing concern over the normalisation of sexist and explicit content in mainstream music.

The commission’s decision to summon both artists is being seen as a warning to the Punjabi music industry at large. It suggests that commercial success will not shield artists from scrutiny if their work is seen to promote gender-based disrespect.

The case is now being closely watched, with attention on how both singers will respond and what action, if any, the police will take.
