"I didn't really discover I loved acting until much later."
HBO Max series The Sex Lives of College Girls has recently concluded its third season and among the lead stars taking the entertainment industry by storm is Amrit Kaur.
Playing Bela Malhotra, the series follows four 18-year-old freshman roommates at Essex College in Vermont as they navigate university life, relationships and academic pressures.
Bela is an aspiring comedian with ambitions to establish herself in the college’s comedy scene.
Discussing her role, Amrit stated: “When I open the script, I immediately get reminded of what’s further in Bela than in me.”
Although Amrit has shone in The Sex Lives of College Girls, her venture into acting was an unconventional one.
The 31-year-old grew up in an Indian Sikh family in Ontario. Her parents emigrated from India to Canada before she was born.
Amrit’s interest in acting came during high school, where she was the senior captain of her school’s improv team.
She later earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theatre from York University in Toronto.
In her early twenties, she trained with acting coach Michèle Lonsdale-Smith, whom she credits as a key influence in her career.
However, Amrit previously revealed that she got into acting for all the wrong reasons.
In an interview with Q’s Tom Power, she said:
“I love acting, but I didn’t really discover I loved acting until much later.
“I got into acting because I wanted to be famous. I wanted to have money. I wanted to be the prettiest girl in school. I wanted it to fill a hole, to fill the pain.
“And then once I got those things, the pain was still there.”
Amrit Kaur’s acting career began with roles in television series such as Anarkali (2015–2018), American Gothic and Kim’s Convenience.
She also appeared in films including Brown Girl Begins and Little Italy as well as The Queen of My Dreams.
But her breakthrough came in 2021 when she was cast as the sex-positive Bela, giving the actress wider recognition.
Created by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, The Sex Lives of College Girls premiered on HBO Max on November 18, 2021.
Amrit Kaur has played a lead role in the teen comedy-drama and on January 23, 2025, series three concluded.
Although HBO Max has not announced whether the series has been renewed for season four, co-creator Justin Noble teased that the third season left “a lot of new threads to follow.
He explained:
“Even though we didn’t do like big old cliffhangers this season, there’s new doors opening.”
“They’re just sort of optimistic doors as opposed to pessimistic wrenches that the girls have to fix.”
Justin cited Kimberly’s “new perspective on what her life might be”, Bela coming out as bisexual, and Whitney “closing a chapter on soccer” and being “ready for new adventures as well outside of that sport that has kind of dominated her life”.
Alongside her acting work, Amrit Kaur has been involved with Gracemoon Arts and Theatre, a Brooklyn-based company that is a place where artists can push boundaries together and share stories that resonate deeply with audiences.
She also recently wrapped up What We’re Up Against, a play that delves into the complex issue of misogyny.
For Amrit Kaur, her acting career can only continue to go up but the biggest question is whether there will be a fourth season of The Sex Lives of College Girls?
