"In times of hatred and fear, he chose courage."

Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta’s highly anticipated period drama has undergone a surprising rebranding ahead of its theatrical release this year.

The film, which had been widely known as Lahore 1947, has now been officially retitled Batwara 1947 by the makers.

They unveiled the film’s first motion poster, confirming both the striking new title and the long-awaited release date simultaneously.

The poster was shared on Sunny Deol’s official Instagram account with the caption:

“In times of hatred and fear, he chose courage. Watch Batwara 1947 in theatres from 14th August 2026.”

The motion poster itself presents a haunting and deeply evocative glimpse into one of the darkest and most painful chapters in the history of the subcontinent.

Set against a backdrop of smoke, raging flames and overwhelming chaos, the visuals capture the fear and violence that defined the Partition of 1947.

One of the sepia-toned poster visuals shows Sunny Deol and veteran actress Shabana Azmi separated by the brutal geography of Partition.

Another visual shows Sunny standing at the centre of the frame, holding a blazing torch as fire and destruction surround him.

Behind him, Preity Zinta appears with a frightened expression while a young girl clings to her for safety and Karan Deol stares ahead with visible concern.

The title change from Lahore 1947 to Batwara 1947 was reportedly necessitated by the rights situation surrounding the title with an existing production.

According to a report, the rights to the title Batwara rested with the family of the late producer Salim Akhtar, who had produced the 1989 film of the same name.

Aamir Khan reportedly acquired the rights by personally meeting the family and reaching an agreement.

Batwara 1947 is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan under his banner Aamir Khan Productions.

The film marks Santoshi’s reunion with Aamir Khan after the beloved comedy Andaz Apna Apna.

It also reunites Santoshi with Sunny Deol after their landmark collaborations on Ghayal and Damini.

The project brings together an extraordinarily accomplished cast that includes Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, Karan Deol and Preity Zinta alongside Sunny Deol.

The film also marks a much-anticipated reunion between Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta.

They have previously appeared together in The Hero: Love Story of a Spy, Farz and Bhaiaji Superhit.

Actor Abhimanyu Singh is expected to play the villain in the film and will be seen in direct conflict with Sunny Deol throughout the narrative.

The music has been composed by the legendary AR Rahman, with lyrics written by veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar.

It is believed that Batwara 1947 is based on Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, O Jamyai Ni.

The story follows a Muslim family that migrates from Lucknow to Lahore and is allocated a haveli left behind by a Hindu family.

The narrative takes a dramatic turn when the arriving family discovers that the Hindu family is still living there and refuses to leave.

Batwara 1947 arrives at a time when Indian cinema has shown a growing appetite for period dramas.
