"The story offers a great mix of talent"
Indian video streaming platform SonyLIV is set to launch in Canada on October 15, 2021, with the highly-anticipated series Tabbar.
SonyLIV offers those with an active subscription plan a wide choice of TV shows, films and sports programmes.
In June 2021, the service had been given a soft launch across 28 global territories including the UK, the Middle East and Australia.
The official launch on October 15, 2021, will host a variety of new shows, primarily in Hindi.
Tamil and Telugu titles are also to be expected, with Bengali and Malayalam to follow shortly.
Also available at launch on October 15, 2021, will be the eight-episode series Tabbar.
Directed by Ajitpal Singh, the series had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in early 2021.
Speaking about the series, Ajitpal said:
“I am always attracted to stories that provide me possibilities and freedom to explore subtext and themes.
“Tabbar is one such story.”
Ajitpal added: “On the surface, it’s a crime thriller, but once you dig deeper, it’s a human drama and you will find themes like God vs no God, Evil vs Good, and drugs, along with spirituality and suffering.
“I was confident that if I was given freedom, I will be able to shape this story in a very refreshing way mainly because I also come from Punjab and I understand that land very well.”
Tabbar is set in Jalandhar, Punjab, and follows the life of the Singh family.
After an unfortunate incident, the family’s life drastically changes.
The cast of Tabbar includes Pavan Malhotra, Supriya Pathak, Gagan Arora, Paramvir Singh Cheema, Kanwaljeet Singh and Ranvir Shorey.
The series was written by Harman Wadala and Sandeep Jain and is produced by Ajay G Rai of JAR Pictures.
SonyLIV was founded in 2013 and is owned by Sony Pictures Networks India.
The head of content for Sony Entertainment Television, SonyLIV and Sony Pictures Networks India, Ashish Golwalkar, said:
“The story offers a great mix of talent and storytelling in a never seen before narrative.
“We are hopeful that like our previous offerings, Tabbar will also reinstate our promise of bringing varied stories from the heartland of India alive.
“Tabbar is set in the backdrop of Punjab and we’re sure our viewers will be glued to their screens.”
The October launch is expected to be supported by a large international marketing campaign.
Tabbar will be available for viewing from October 15, 2021, exclusively on SonyLIV.
