Facing competition from other big Hollywood titles, Slumdog was defiant in its wins. Having been nominated for eleven BAFTA awards, winning seven was a very good result for this low budget movie that was a project that had many against it from the onset.

One of the fantastic wins for Bollywood yet again, is for the music score of Slumdog Millionaire, won by A.R. Rahman for this category, adding yet another accolade to his collection.

After winning so many awards so far, it is very likely that the movie will be looking at scooping some Oscars.

The BAFTA awards won by the movie were as follows.

  • Best Film
  • Best Director
  • Cinematography
  • Adapted Screenplay
  • Music
  • Sound
  • Editing

The film has also won other industry awards making it a hat-trick winner. The Writers Guild of America gave the film the award for the Best Adapted Screenplay. Danny Boyle, won the Best Director award from the Directors Guild of America and the film also won a top award for ‘Best cast in a movie’ from the Screen Actors Guild.  Thus, winning all three awards from the actors, producers and directors guilds.

Other winners of BAFTA’s on the night included, Mickey Rourke receiving the Leading Actor award for his role in The Wrestler, Kate Winslet receiving the Leading Actress award for her part in The Reader, the late Heath Ledger was given the Supporting Actor award for his role as the Joker in the Dark Knight and the Supporting Actress award went to Penélope Cruz for her role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Here are videos of the awards event. The first one shows you Dev Patel and Freida Pinto on the red carpet on their way into the awards ceremony and the second, shows Danny Boyle receiving his award amongst the other stars.

Following the BAFTA win, Freida Pinto won the Best Actress award for her role in Slumdog Millionaire at the Elle Style Awards. The 24 year old former model now actress was completley over joyed at winning the accolade being her first, for her first ever film too.
