Despite it being a great source of sexual fantasy, it is no secret the adult entertainment industry is hardly fun and glamourous.
As the saying goes, ‘porn is all smoke and mirrors’. Besides, exaggeration is the real driving force behind a good video.
Still, you have to admit you are just a little curious about the reality of making porn.
A number of Reddit users who identify themselves as porn actors, actresses and producers have recently shared their experiences on the social network. We look at some of the revelations of this huge industry.
Debunking the Myths
Former porn producer, CalvinDehaze, is here to lay out all the juicy insider knowledge and some ugly truth.

How to Fake Ejaculation
User pornishard writes: “It’s actually pretty hard to get [and] maintain an erection on set. Making porn is pretty unsexy.
“Sometimes they use fake jizz. Not all the time, but sometimes for creampie stuff.”
According to MissCarrieNation, one common way to keep it real is by reversing the order of the shoot.
She explains that this is where climax shots are filmed first prior to the sexual scenes. This means guys look as if they last longer and “no pressure to finish after ‘extremely unsexy sex’, as you put it.”

For example, use a tube topped with fake semen to simulate the action so it all appears to be fresh and real.
The Dark Side
Ela Darling, who claims to be an ‘actual porn star’ and even shares her Twitter profile, gives us an insight into the less-spoken side of the industry.
She writes: “We undergo a rigorous testing protocol called the PASS system in which we are tested every two weeks for a whole panel of the best STD tests on the market.
“We don’t get royalties from porn…People often think we’re loaded and it couldn’t be farther from the truth for most of us.”
Ela also says she is on the board of directors for the Adult Performer Advocacy Committee based in Los Angeles.
Fellow porn actress, mrsinsomnia, describes how the tough challenges of her job can take the toll on her body and mind.
She says: “It’s extremely physically and mentally demanding. I know plenty of women who couldn’t cut it physically.
“You are putting your body through A LOT for each shoot at least four times a week (not to mention if you do a lot of anal scenes like myself).
“I think getting into this industry without a good head on your shoulders is dangerous.”
Other common themes that appear in the discussion include the unpleasant smell of the set in general (and some actresses’ vaginas in particular), as well as the prevalent use of viagra to deliver a stellar performance.
Sometimes, as audience, we forget the porn industry is essentially an entertainment entity that thrives on our desires for pleasure.
For every happy viewer, there is an immense amount of preparation and hard work – not unlike shooting a movie.
We don’t want to know what we see is not real, because it offers a great deal of escapism, fantasy and satisfaction.
But as these Reddit users openly discuss, the ups-and-downs of working in an adult industry are just as real as any other occupation – long hours, mental stress, salary and so on.
It seems many more questions need to be asked and answered, before we can break down the stereotypes and unravel one of the most misunderstood industries in the world.
