"increasing incidents of violence against children"

A Pakistani teacher has been suspended for allegedly attacking a first-grade student, resulting in the child losing his right eye.

The shocking incident happened at a government school in Nawabshah’s Mehran Colony.

The child, Zakir, said he was playing with a classmate when the teacher, identified as Abid Zardari, forced him to stand.

Following this, the teacher allegedly punched and kicked him, resulting in severe damage to his eye.

The incident sparked outrage, with Zakir’s uncle, Naushad, leading a protest at the Nawabshah Press Club.

He demanded justice and criticised the education department’s inaction, raising concerns about the rising cases of violence in government schools.

Naushad said: “The increasing incidents of violence against children and the education department’s silence raise serious questions about student safety.”

The Sindh School Education and Literacy Department took notice of the incident and suspended Zardari.

A committee was formed to investigate the matter.

Officials have pledged to deliver a detailed report within three days to determine further action.

This heartbreaking case sheds light on the broader issue of corporal punishment in schools across Pakistan.

Although banned, physical abuse remains prevalent, particularly in government schools often attended by children from lower-income families.

Advocacy groups and concerned citizens have renewed calls for stricter enforcement of laws and comprehensive oversight to protect students.

The Nawabshah tragedy is not an isolated case.

In 2023, a teacher at a special education centre in Islamabad’s Sector H-9 was suspended for brutally torturing disabled students.

The torture included pulling the students by their hair to wake them up.

Parliamentary Secretary for Law and Justice Mehnaz Akber Aziz criticised the lack of accountability.

Social media has erupted following the Nawabshah incident, with demands for stricter penalties against abusive educators.

Many expressed anger at the systemic failures allowing such incidents to persist.

A user wrote: “An eye for an eye should be applied in this case. What type of ignorance is this?

Another said:

“Teachers with such low patience are so dangerous! He should be punished.”

One commented: “What a barbaric country we live in.”

Another remarked: “What will such educators teach to the students? They are illiterate and ignorant themselves.”

A growing number of voices are urging reforms in teacher training and regular monitoring of schools.

The government’s response to the Nawabshah case will be crucial in restoring public confidence in the education system.
