Upset over his crush’s marriage with another man, a man in Pune allegedly threw acid at a woman’s face.

The incident took place on November 23, 2020, in the Parvatigaon area of Pune.

The woman suffered seven per cent burn injuries, mostly on her face.

A senior doctor at the Sassoon General Hospital said that the woman was in a stable condition.

The accused and the victim knew each other from childhood as they had been brought up in the same neighbourhood.

They had completed their education up to Class 12 and came from families of casual workers.

The accused wanted to marry the victim but in June 2020, she got married to another man.

After finding out, he was allegedly upset and wanted to exact revenge.

On November 21, the woman visited her parent’s home.

After the woman arrived, the accused reportedly approached her and asked her to meet him near a local school at around 8.30 am on November 23, 2020.

The two met and the man brought up the topic of marriage. This prompted the woman to tell the man that she refused to have a relationship with him.

The woman asked the accused not to contact her and this enraged him.

Senior inspector Ram Rajmane said:

“Enraged by this, the youth pulled out a bottle containing some chemical liquid and threw it on her face.

“The woman immediately used a piece of cloth to wipe the acid, but it caused burn injuries on her.”

The youth was arrested on the night of November 23, 2020.

In another acid attack case, a woman named Binata Santhal, of Tripura allegedly threw acid at her boyfriend after he refused to marry her.

The 27-year-old woman was sent to 14-day judicial remand by a Khowai local court.

The 30-year-old victim was taken to the Agartala Government Medical College and Hospital and was in critical condition.

The victim was injured in the respiratory tract, nose and eyes.

While confessing to the crime, Binata told the police that she and the man were in a relationship for over eight years.

They knew each other since their school days and they had shifted to Pune after the man completed his graduation.

In March 2020, the man returned to Tripura, leaving Santhal in Pune. For the next three months, the man ended all contact with Santhal.

When the woman returned in August, she could not find the man in his village.

When she found and confronted him, she threw acid at him.
