Politician Mahua Moitra was trolled for allegedly hiding her Louis Vuitton handbag while talks on rising inflation were underway in the Lok Sabha.

Cameras showed Dr Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar sitting next to Mahua. Meanwhile, the designer handbag is next to her on the seat.

Dr Dastidar then stands up to speak about India’s rising costs.

But as she talks, Mahua takes the bag and places it on the floor and away from the cameras.

The video clip went viral and social media users wondered how a member of the Trinamool Congress party, which has been criticising the government for rising costs, was carrying an expensive handbag.

The Louis Vuitton bag is believed to be worth around Rs. 1.6 Lakh (£1,660).

Social media users quickly began trolling the politician.

Many criticised Mahua for owning such an expensive bag while so many citizens are struggling with living costs.

One said: “And this female talks about inflation and common man suffering, keep your mouth shut Mahua Moitra.

“What you are carrying is the yearly income of many in this country!”

Another wrote: “What can be kept inside a 1.6 lakh worth Louis Vuitton bag but can’t be kept inside a 1.6K bag??? Hypocrisy.”

A third commented: “If hypocrisy had a face ever, it would definitely be Mahua Moitra.”

One said: “Look at TMC leader Mahua Moitra hiding her expensive purse of Rs 2.5 lakh in 5 seconds during the price rise debate.

“People like these rant about poverty but the fact is that they have no concern for the poor.”

Others trolled the politician for placing her bag on the floor all of a sudden.

One user said: “You can wear a Louis Vuitton or a Gucci if you can afford it, there seems nothing wrong in this, but there’s no point in hiding it.

“Either you use and flaunt it or give it up!”

A second person said: “It’s okay to own a Louis Vuitton but to hide it under the table as soon as a debate on inflation starts is fakery of another level.”

The comments resulted in Mahua responding.

Tweeting a collage of photographs featuring her with the bag, Mahua jibed:

“Jholewala fakir in Parliament since 2019.

“Jhola leke aye the… jhola leke chal padenge… (Came with a bag, will leave with it).”

The tweet was a similar remark made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a 2016 rally.
