The highly anticipated film adaptation of the epic Indian mythological tale, Ramayana, has hit a roadblock even before the commencement of its shooting schedule.

According to reports, producer Madhu Mantena has withdrawn from the project, which stars Ranbir Kapoor.

This has left its production in a state of uncertainty.

The project, helmed by Nitesh Tiwari, was originally set to be co-produced by Allu Aravind and Madhu Mantena.

However, Mantena’s reported departure has raised questions about the future of the film.

The reasons behind Mantena’s alleged decision to step back from the project remain undisclosed.

In light of this setback, Namit Malhotra, CEO of DNEG, an Oscar-winning visual effects company, has joined the production team of Ramayana.

Known for their exceptional work on blockbuster films such as Oppenheimer, Ex Machina, Interstellar, Dune and First Man, DNEG’s involvement signifies a commitment to delivering top-notch visual effects for the ambitious project.

Ramayana boasts an ensemble cast, with Ranbir Kapoor set to essay the iconic role of Lord Ram.

Sai Pallavi has been cast as Sita, following Alia Bhatt’s exit from the project due to scheduling conflicts.

Speculations suggest that KGF star Yash is in talks to portray the antagonist Ravana.

Meanwhile, veteran actor Sunny Deol is reportedly confirmed to play Hanuman.

Additionally, Bobby Deol and Vijay Sethupathi are said to be in discussions for the roles of Kumbhakarna and Vibhishana, respectively.

Recent reports hinted at the inclusion of Amitabh Bachchan. He is said to have been finalised for the pivotal role of King Dashrath.

However, there has been no official confirmation regarding Bachchan’s casting at the time of writing.

Earlier in 2024, it was revealed that Ranbir Kapoor would undergo extensive voice and diction training to lend a unique vocal identity to his character in Ramayana.

A source said: “In Ramayana, Nitesh wants to make sure Ranbir sounds different from the characters he’s played in the past.

“Being a versatile actor, Ranbir is enjoying this process of trying something new.”

Despite the production hiccup caused by Mantena’s apparent departure, preparations for Ramayana are still underway.

Shooting is expected to commence in the summer of 2024.

The film aims to bring the timeless tale of love, sacrifice and righteousness to life on the silver screen.

It promises an immersive cinematic experience for audiences worldwide.
